How do you do it? For example, how do you throw a jab and then a left hook as you're going in? I'm having trouble getting the power into my hook because I don't know what I should be doing with my left foot. Do I slide it forward as I throw the hook? How do I work in the foot pivot then? Do I jump forward and throw the hook while my front foot is in the air? There seems to be a lack of control and power there.

Step in with the jab, then pivot the left foot as you throw the left hook. Just to clarify, you're no longer moving forward when you throw the LH, unless your throwing a kangaroo hook ala Floyd Mayweather lol.

I'm starting to be able to do this. It has taken me alot of practice and sparring with leg weights on and alot of footspeed drills to get this down without being open for a count.

To the above person, when ya move forward and back while punch, the punches generally gotta be straight, and start with itty bitty steps. once ya get better you'll be able to take bigger and bigger steps and do it quicker. just start slow and dont expect to get it right away

Learn to co-ordinate the feet with the hands.

Its not a particularly good combo to throw if your going straight in, its okay if you finish with a right hand but the jab then the left hook on its own can leave a little open, especially if you are going straight in, its not so bad if you are jabbing then hooking and pivoting off to your left as you can avoid a potential counter but just coming in straight with a jab then a left hook is going to leave you a bit vulnerable defensively, the only other way to throw it is to use the jab as though to blind the opponent and leap in the behind it with a left hook where by even if you miss you can still move away off to the side, however just setting up a single left hook with a jab is not particularly good combo.

Here is an example of throwing a little feint with the jab to disguise the left hook as your leaping in behind it.

It looks like Jones' hook lands before his feet have even landed after leaping?

It looks like he leaped off of a pivot to me, so that's where the power generation came from, he didn't just leap and arm-punch like some do.

Roy is not the dude that novices should be trying to emulate.

    ^^yea lol.

Anyway, I've been messing around with the footwork for this in my room. Tell me if this is correct for throwing a combination while coming forward. If I throw a straight right, my left foot moves forward as I throw my punch. Then when I throw a left, my right foot comes forward bringing me back to 'stance.' Does this sound right? Or do you move right foot with right punch and vice versa for left?

Left foot with left hand, right foot with right hand.

Instead of shrinking your stance you make it bigger then you go back to 'stance'.

Left foot moves while left hand punches,
you are now in a big stance,
right hand moves while right hand punches,
you are now back in stance.

step with ur left everytime u jab

if u want to throw a single straight right

step in with the left then throw ur right

dont take 2 little steps and throw it

1 step 1 punch, dont show ur opponent what ur about 2 do next

If you could do what RJJ does you shouldn't be here!

Unless you are taller and a counter puncher you should throw the jab and take a step toward and left of your opponent. That puts you in position to pivot on the front foot for the hook. But unless you got the dude totally confused you should probably lead step, throw jab, rear step, straight, THEN pivot into your left hook.

Spin and release the foot. Dont hop. If you time it all right, naturally you will come forward on the end of your loop. Physics!
