What do you think the most important things to learn initially?

    Thanks

Sprawl. But that's simply a good starting point. Marcus Davis has admitted that he went in to MMA falsely believing that he'd just knock everyone out (like Toney). Then when he discovered that wasn't enough, he figured he'd just learn how to sprawl and keep the fight on his feet. Then when he realized that wasn't enough, he finally understood what it meant to be a complete MMA fighter versed in multiple areas of combat.

I have to say sprawl too since takedowns will be their (boxers) kryptonite.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you don't have the basics, you're done. You're not going to develop a good enough sprawl to stay off the ground. You need to learn to survive once you're on the mat.

    Learn to sprawl.

Learn BJJ. Join a gym. Get ready to shell out dough!

Spar with guys who kick (Mauy Thai, Tae Kwan do) and elbow to get used to looking at the whole body.

Joining a good school is your best bet.

Finding a training partner and obtaining the Gracie Combatives series wouldn't hurt. It is the best presented bjj educational series I've seen.

Since I think you're new to this area, I would like to ask you not to hold my avatar against me. I lost a bet.

For the record though, Marcus Davis is a **** boxer. I can't even see him relying on boxing skills.

really have to learn TDD, the sprawl and defending against underhooks and that sort of thing. it wont be easy, but eventually you will be taken down even with the best TDD so you must learn to defend of your back.

    good luck!

BJJ jeff would be the best way to start off, it wil teach you the basic concepts of the ground game like positions, control etc, then you can develop into submissions and submission defence

after month of this id venture into takedowns, takedown defence, submission wrestling, to be honest jeff its a load of **** to learn and is hard to do from instructional vids, i have dabbled in mma only because my hands dont hold up in boxing anymore especially my thumb and if i have another bad break this season i am gonna hjave to take a good year off boxing

i have a mate who trains me bjj every week and i return the favour by teaching him boxing and i have learned far more this way than i did at the mma club

everyone is saying learn how to sprawl and tdd first but this is nonsense, sprawling is one move and not necessary unless you are going straight into sparring or competition, what if your sprawl doesnt come off and your on your back, all that sprawling and tdd aint gonna do **** when your on your back
