Moving/punching heavy

    Yesterday,I've been told that I "pushed" my punches and that people could see them coming and that I moved heavy.

    Any exercises/drills I can do to correct this problem?

    Consciously tell yourself to start snapping your punches more and bring your hand quicker back to your face. Keep drilling this and keep practicing it until it's automatic

    exactly what he said, dont think about power when u punch, the power comes alone with speed and technique, the faster u get ur hand back the more time u have to release another, you want to hit your opponent not push him

    Yep. Don't worry so much about sending your hand out, worry about getting it back fast.

    -- Skip rope to strengthen your calves and sense of balance. This way when you need to get up on the balls of your feet you can.

    -- Shadow box in the ring with an emphasis on MOVING. Side steps one direction, reverse. Step forward. Step back. Step diagonal, reverse. All with an emphasis on moving quickly, setting, throwing a shot/combo, and then moving quickly again. Practice advancing AND retreating.

    -- Do "snap" drills. Stand in front of the bag, pick a punch or combo then wait. Then explode remembering to fire from being relaxed, only sink in the bag a few inches, then focusing on returning to start as FAST as possible. Circle then repeat. Vary the "pause" interval. Hopefully you can get it down to the 1-3 second range. The goal should be a sharp crisp shot AND returning to Boxing stance quickly.

    I think the problem is trying to be "strong". Placement is what sparks people. KO power is helpful, but look at Ernie Shavers. Punches guys see never land flush. Focus on seeing your opening and delivering a fast crisp punch to the target ASAP. :good

    My coach tells us to practice the motion, slowly at first, until its perfect and your are on balance the entire time.

    Then, do it over and over and over and over. Eventually you will gain speed.

    After a while technique+speed = POWER!

    Personally, I used to be guilty of pushing with my straight right. To fix it, I spent a lot of time on the bag working on snapping my hips in the punch and snapping my hand back to the starting position at the end of the punch.

    Once you learn that punch you can move to the Hook and apply the same kind of hip action to generate power.

    Everybody's advice has been great (esp. the Kelley vid). It helps me to think about kind of exploding the target that I hit. Instead of crushing the guy's skull, I want to shatter his jaw with a sharp punch or make his head explode when I hit it. It's difficult to explain but you'll know it when you get it.

    The main thing is snapping your punch back as fast as you can.
