"Mr. Calzaghe"

Feature length documentary coming to cinemas next week, focusing on the relationship between Joe & Enzo as boxer/coach and son/father.

I can't help but wonder if all the increased visibility from Calzaghe lately (opining about Ward & Froch in various interviews, doing guest punditry, and now this film) is pointing to a big-money return to action.

There are certainly a handful of very lucrative options there for him. Froch at 168lbs would still probably set UK records despite the Nottinghamshire man absent from the ring for eighteen months and the Welshman having not fought in seven years. Ward at light heavyweight is desperately overdue for a credible opponent, especially if his tentative deal to meet Sergey Kovalev in 2016 falls through for any reason, and while it would probably not be the most exciting match it would still compel a high viewership as the battle of two unbeaten p4p talents who successively reigned as "the man" at super middleweight for a combined span of ~15 years. Roy Jones, Jr. is being guided towards a WBA cruiserweight title grab (originally scheduled to have a vacant title fight in a fourth meeting with Antonio Tarver, later changed to Enzo Maccarinelli, whom Jones will now meet in a non-title match before most likely proceeding to a vacant WBC title fight next time out provided he isn't KTFO) and rematching him would not only net Calzaghe a neat little purse despite the absurdity of it all, but would enhance his legacy by making him a three-division champion.

A belt at cruiser would be low-hanging fruit as he already beat Jones rather easily in 2008 and Jones is now 46. :think

Could be tempting.

Plus, there is personal enmity between he and Froch...and there would be lots of pride on the line against Ward, the man who effectively replaced him as SMW king for a time and made easier work of Kessler (arguably Calzaghe's greatest win, taking everything into consideration)

 

...and/or ego and personal glory, should he elect for any of the options I listed. (and really I can't see him returning for anything except Ward, Froch or Jones II)

I think Calzaghe would need to get thoroughly beaten up (in Lacy fashion) by a Blake Caparello or something. :yep

...or schooled & shut out by Seanie Monaghan.
