Because he was at the very end of his career. He would inevitably lose to someone he was much better than so why disgrace his legacy? Prime Lewis knocks Vitali out but they fought at the end of Lewis' career when it was a lot closer. Assuming they fought again, Lewis would likely win again but then people would say "Why has Lewis retired?". If you want Lewis to retire on a loss, fair enough, but he proved he was a better fighter at the very end of his career than Vitali was at his best. He proved enough to 90% of boxing fans and the only ones who struggle to accept that and demand further fights are the Klitschko fans.
