Viktor Kotochigov vs. Javier José Clavero, 10 rounds @ lightweight

 

This is for the WBC International lightweight title, 1st defense of Kotochigov. He picked up the vacant belt after Devin Haney vacated it over the summer.

 

Round 1

Kotochigov is pivoting to his left, changing angles on Clavero every few steps as they circle and dipping left to bury a left hook into his flanks. Clavero is jabbing at the nose of Kotochigov, usually checked by Kotochigov's own jab, then leaning back and twitching his upper body to either side, gelatinous in his movements. Kotochigov isn't chasing after him, just waiting to punch with him when Clavero wobbles his way forward to chance a right hand behind the jab, and sneaking in those left hooks downstairs.

Round 2

Kotochigov is caught by a left cross as Clavero momentarily turns southpaw, virtually Dempsey-shifting by accident while stumbling in a sidestep to keep up with Kotochigov's surer-footed lateral movement. The left hand was thrown behind a perfunctory right jab almost in desperation, to protect himself in his state of vulnerability, but it wound up being serendipitous as it gave Kotochigov pause for a minute. Clavero is troweling down at the face with a jab that first travels overhead, then converting the left to an upper-hook at the chest, but Kotochigov is keeping at proper distance to slip Clavero's shots and counter with both jabs on the face and neat combos, favoring a spearing right on the jaw and then a left hook at various altitudes.

Round 3

Kotochigov is flipping jabs up into Clavero's face off the lead hip while coming forward, then halting and spreading his legs wide, veering outside to lure Clavero in, giving himself a relative breather as he lays back and counters. Hard rights landing on the chin for Kotochigov as Clavero slams in his own right hand insistently, mostly hitting arm or chest.

Round 4

Kotochigov is cut between his eyes, from what I'm not sure. Haven't really been any head clashes. Jabs traded as they circle, and Clavero tries jumping in on Kotochigov but is met by a screen of crossed arms, elbows flared out to either side to form a full-body shield for Kotochigov, pushing both arms out in unison and bumping Clavero back whence he came. Wild looping rights on the body from Clavero diving in, face-down. Kotochigov is stepping deftly around him and placing accurate jabs on the face. Kotochigov moves in with a combo as Clavero is diving in and their heads do in fact clash now. The ref admonishes Kotochigov for it. Body jabs by Kotochigov. Clavero almost kneels as he lowers himself to knock on Kotochigov's stomach with a right hand, then springs up with a left hook at the head, but Kotochigov able to sway back and counter flush, only being grazed himself.

Round 5

Kotochigov is starting to walk Clavero down with heavy rounded punches on the body, keeping him on the march with a high stiff jab in the face. Clavero is following through on each wild hook, and clipping the jaw of Kotochigov with his elbow - perhaps intentionally. Clavero, however, is the one entreating the ref as he gets the brunt of the damage when their heads clash (although he's the one diving in, before Kotochigov descends to meet him with chopping rights). Heavy right hands now landing high & low for Kotochigov as Clavero backpedals.

Round 6

Kotochigov is still finding the body an easy target even at range, but Clavero is darting in behind a climbing triple body-to-head jab to force headhunting exchanges, but getting the worst of them as Kotochigov lands pinpoint short right hands and left hooks turning Clavero's head. Clavero is now bending over when Kotochigov throws his right hand, and is caught behind the head.

Round 7

Kotochigov is stepping left and cleverly jabbing Clavero wherever he is open, below the guard in his abdomen or just above, in his trachea. Clavero is pawing his own jab and trotting a few steps in either direction, then lobbing a right at the head, slipped by Kotochigov and countered with a left hook on the body. Wild looping right diving in by Clavero, sidestepped by Kotochigov who then peppers the crown of Clavero with light straights.

Round 8

Kotochigov is actually getting strapped on the left cheek with a sneaky up-and-over right from Clavero at long range now. Clavero moving his feet a lot more, forcing Kotochigov to expend greater energy walking him down. Clavero actually finding Kotochigov with body combos now, diving in behind the low jab, getting off in twos or threes, and slinking out still in a deep bow. Kotochigov, however, buzzes Clavero badly with a right hand lead on the chin after feigning a left hook and making Clavero flinch straight backward.

Round 9

Kotochigov is jabbing into the belly and then flurrying at the head when Clavero's guard starts to drop. Clavero raises his arms quickly but clumsily and still permits a few shots to get through, rattling him even though Kotochigov is only firing at like 75%, reserving his big shots for when there's a serious opening. Right hands on the left orbital bone of Clavero from Kotochigov dipping his entire body inside, then bracing left hooks on the waist as Clavero's gloves come up. Clavero is shooting out straight punches into Kotochigov's ribs while bent forward, but only tickling him before drawing himself upright as though a marionette on a string and trying in vain to slip Kotochigov's attacks.
