Mohamed Mimoune vs. Darren Richardson Surtees, 10 rounds @ super lightweight

 

I'd wondered how they would deal with the draw situation. I'm glad Ofori got through, but whew, that was closer a call than it needed to be.

 

FYI:

Mauro "El Rayo" Maximiliano Godoy of Argentina scored a knockout victory on the undercard (over Ghanaian brawler Tackie Annan); the fact it was at super lightweight suggests to me that Godoy is being by MTK on standby as tourney alternate.

 

Round 1

Mimoune is waving a long right jab at Surtees and holding up a high peekaboo guard, elbows raised flush with or above his nipples and scalp completely engulfed in his mitts. Lots of circling and posing by Mimoune, just pawing out and measuring distance with the jab, and then a few straights noodled into the body from afar. Surtees is checking the right jab as Mimoune rows it out with a parrying left jab, and then drilling into the abdomen with a hard right cross. Surtees catches Mimoune atop the head with a combination late and surges forward to follow up, but Mimoune lapses into a shell and sticks his tongue out defiantly.

Brilliant start by the County Durham boy, that was. I had Mimoune a big favorite in this one.

 

Round 2

Mimoune is having a better round, stepping forward and not waiting on Surtees, pushing the right jab up on an invisible plank into the nose and then swatting right hooks off it, or ducking in smoothly to screw-drive in a left downstairs. Mimoune feeling his oats now, moving inside with his guard raised and lowered alternately, showing a bit of swagger - and Surtees clips him with a counter right and down he goes! Mimoune up and playing it careful the rest of the way.

That was a good round for MM until he went down; now he finds himself in an early hole. Let's see how that big two-point swings affects both men's disposition... (whether it bolsters Surtees' confidence in a good way, or makes him reckless... and whether Mimoune stays on the front-foot or becomes gun-shy)

 

Of the four super lightweights so far, granted this one is still in process, Surtees has looked to have the best form on the day, IMO. Could wind up going from underdog to live bet in the semis..
