A mate of mine has started training muay thai last year and is getting into it. Hes doing a work placement next summer and wants to do a month out there at a muay thai training camp. Has anyone done this? is it worth it and did you get the time to travel around thailand and enjoy yourself aswell as train? Hes looked at http://www.tigermuaythai.com/ but if people have personal experience/advice that would be great
From what I've read Tiger Muay Thai is good but it's more tourist aimed. If he's looking for a 'real' gym he should check out some of the ones on this website. Its where I get my Muay Thai news but it has camp reviews and that sort of thing. I've never been or trained myself but this may help :good http://www.mymuaythai.com/archives/muay-thai-camps-2/ Check the rest of the site for reviews of certain camps.
You sir are a nobleman. To be fair my mate is more of a tourist than a dedicated muay thai practitioner so that might be better for him ill pass over the link for him though
my friends and i like to recommend sinbi in phuket every chance we get. my friend goes every summer for 3 months (school teacher) and at least 1 other time during the year. I'll be going this year or next.
Have you/him been to many? What are they like outside of the training? Are there many people who go on their own?
My buddy (who posts on a bunch of forums, including mymuaythai.com as ryukyu damashii) has trained at a bunch of places in Thailand and always goes back to Sinbi. Outside of training, they're on the beach - so lots of ocean fun, and they will take you out for safe night on the town if you ask. A good number of foreigners train there, but those foreigners tend to be pro and amateur fighters from all over the world.
Interesting, I'd love to go over and train when I'm finished school. Not to become a Nak Muay or anything but just to see what it is like.
Cheers ive sent the links to my mate to have a look. The thing is hes pretty new to it started in september but loves it and does about 4-6hours muay thai a week now and really wants to go. But because of this I dont know if a really high standard camp will be as good for him as hell be out of his depth. Also hell probably be heading out on his own so wants to know if its cool to do that and meet people etc.
Im currently here doing a documentary on the new Phuket Top Team in Phuket. Its just up the road from Tiger. As well as the obvious training/fighting Muay thai here also they have a good team of mma fighters, a jiu jitsu blackbelt professor from brazil and a very good western boxing coach(former Olympic fighter/trainer). Brand new facilities, you can check it out here http://www.phukettopteam.com/
Thats quality ill have a look, Im doing a year studying in Australia and I was going to look into doing a month or so at one of these camps on the way back. Im much more into boxing than Muay thai which ive never tried but ITs alot bigger in Australia than Western boxing so im going to try getting into it out there. Thanks for the help
if it is your first time train at a tourist friendly gym so you can see what its like. I have trained at a ffew gyms in bangkok. Dont commit to 1 camp incase you don't like it there, you are better of staying in a hotel and trying a few gyms to see which one you like the most. i have been to gyms that where supposed to be good, but if you get a **** pad holder who doesn't teach you anything or correct technique it can sometimes be hard to change trainers. this happened to me i asked to change trainer and they got a bit upset.
