This being a boxing forum, the crude results of the poll in the UFC Fighters vs Boxers thread show that amongst those who participated in the poll, most believe that the boxer would win in an MMA rules match where the advantage should technically be for the MMA fighter.

The basic argument against the UFC fighter is that they are sub-optimal strikers, and that they're jack of all trades and master of none, therefore they are not likely to win against a boxer who is a skilled striker.

Let's narrow the contrast a little bit - who do you think has the advantage in a Muay Thai match (ie. elbows, knees, stand up clinching & strikes from clinch allowed)? Both are striking specialists, the boxer is still has punching expertise, and one could argue that the Muay Thai fighter is a jack of all striking trades since they spread their striking training over range of striking weapons that extend beyond their fists.

So, Muay Thai fighter or the Boxer?

Muay Thai fighter because the boxer don't have the defense against knee, shin and even elbow. It's not the same thing to see and block a punch than it is for an elbow.

But you could argue that a boxer doesn't not have a takedown defence either, because that's what an MMA fighter is going to do against a skilled boxer, yet most people here argue that a boxer still has the advantage?

oh i'm totally saying that MMA fighter, under MMA rules, will win 98 percent of the time if he chose the right gameplan.
You need years of grappling to avoid bad situation on the ground. You can't think you can do the same thing like Chuck Liddell because it look easy. It's niot.

    I'd agree with that, yes.

Actually that reminds of something I was thinking of previously. The boxer also has some serious in-fighting weapons in the the hooks, the shovel hooks and the uppercuts. Would they not be able to stand up against the knee and elbows?

That looked painful. I looked up Ignashov's opponent Carter Williams, I expected to find a boxer but his wikipedia page says he's a kickboxer and mma fighter as well? If that's the case, I'd have expected him to have offered some decent defence against Ignashov's kicks?? What happened??

haha alright that makes more sense, all I looked at was the last name when I was looking through Ignashov's fights on his wikipedia page. At least now, from this clip I can see this Williams fighting as described on his page.

If the Thai fighter fights smart and uses his kicks to keep the boxer out of punching range and consistently beat them legs down then yeah. If the Thai fighter trys to use his hands frequently the boxer has an advantage they usually dont have the fluidity and the crispness or the defensive skill a top boxer does. As a guy who has boxed for 5 years now I see it when I go agianst Muay Thai guys in sparring they try alittle hand to hand with me and I start kicking ass when im getting nailed with switch kicks and roundhouses and teeps I cant touch them.
