I have recently stopped boxing, because my doctor advised me to. I am going to get my nose fixed, in the near future, and will have to take a break after that. after the break I have been thinking about starting to muay thai. What is everybodys thoughts on Muay thai? To me it seems like it is kinda like boxing, just with elbows, kicks and knees? - I mean that I will be able to use my boxing skills to some degree? how do you guys think the Winning fg5000 headgear will be for muay thai?
You can't box because your doc told you not to but you think you'll be able to do Muay Thai? You don't know much about MT at all do you? I'm guessing you can't box because of your nose? Well try a shin across your face instead of a punch and see how your nose feels...
What virus said has a lot of truth to it, but I will say that I tend to suffer a lot less head trauma when I train muay thai as opposed to boxing. There are 2 reasons for this: 1. There are more targets in muay thai than boxing. The inclusion of leg kicks & the devastating nature of knees to the body means that your damage gets spread around more. 2. Sparring in muay thai does tend to be a little bit lighter. Fighters in both types of gyms can bang; but with legs involved, there's a higher risk for injury, so muay thai folks go lighter more frequently. That being said, we rarely wear head gear when sparring in muay thai; and there's no way you're going to see kicks in the Winning headgear with the face bar. Yes, you will have a lot of carry-over from boxing to muay thai; my muay thai coach in DC used to direct guys to boxing gyms to pick up decent hands before trying muay thai. His reasoning was that it was a lot easier to teach a puncher to kick than to teach a kicker to punch. I'll reiterate what virus said and recommend you get fixed up first and after you heal, see if your doctor has a change of heart. A kick or knee to the face will bust you up pretty bad.
No, I don't know much about MT. thats why I'm asking about the sport:thumbsup Yep, can't box because of my nose, but as stated above i will have surgery on it, and after that I will take a break, so my nose can heal. I would like to try something different from boxing, and thought of MT. regarding my nose problems, thats why i'm asking about the winning fg5000 headgear. Can you please answer my questions in the opening post?
Thanks, replys like this I was looking for.:thumbsup And will of course talk to my doctor before doing anything
I think you'll enjoy MT a lot more than straight boxing. You can tell sparring partners 'no head kicks'; no elbows and no knees to the head is standard for most regular sparring. You can still do bag work, pad work and sparring without head contact while your nose heals. Its a good plan.
No, you can still work on 60-80% of the things you need to do to become a VERY GOOD fighter. Like sprints, roadwork, s & c, pads, heavybag. Only thing you can't do is spar. You should keep training and just avoid sparring for the year or whatever it takes. You might be a better fighter than when you started when you're done.
i use to box had 10 amateur fights, then went to muay thai. I like muay thai so much more, i have now had 5 thai fights. You get hit in the head a lot less in muay thai sparring, because there is so many more targets to hit. That is one of the reasons why i stopped boxing as well. i was getting hit in the head too much and always had head aches. You will be able to use your boxing in muay thai but you will have to change your style to a thai boxing style. mainly straight punches and long hooks. no inside fighting because you will be clinching at that range. i think starting with boxing has given me a advantage over most thai fighter because boxing is at a closer range. muay thai you fight from a longer range and i see punches and kicks coming easier because of the longer range. You will always have some sort of injury if you train muay thai seriously, either from, knee clash, kicking elbows, etc. It is a much harder tougher sport then boxing, but i love it..
when we spar in muay thai we never wear head gear. but we don't punch at 100% power to the head, we don't kick at 100% power either because it will just cause injuries. I spar in 12oz gloves but i don't hit hard, just use speed not power. i think that head gear will be no good because it will block your vision from kicks coming from the side and even push kicks. muay thai sparring is much more casual then boxing sparring. in muay thai there might be 8 people sparring at the one time in the ring, just lightly. But in boxing you usually have the ring to you and your sparring partner and its at a much harder pace usually. We spar hard only when we have a fight coming up to about 1 week out, then after that no sparring because you don't want to risk a injury like a knee clash or something. yeah but i think that head gear is no good for muay thai. I have a similar one like that with the nose bar from when i had my nose broken in boxing sparring. just join a gym and just do pads and bag work, learn your kicks, knees, elbows. you can even clinch you won't get hit in the nose. once your nose is better then you can start sparring again. you will love muay thai, boxing is boring..
