That`s true Mugabi was good that night. What stands out to me was his determination. Hagler had to beat the fight out of him.

Every time Hagler caught him, he responded straight away with sharp counters that were hard. Hagler was on near empty to get the better of him. Tough tough fight for the smaller Duran, how ever long it goes imo

I thought Mugabi too strong. However looked at tape again and Barkley was huge like a
LHW. Duran was at his best with fighters coming forward. Barkley was Duran last hurrah.
In a fierce battle Duran outpoints Mugabi on points.

Am I missing something regarding Mugabi?

He was a solid fighter but he never beat anyone of note and his legend is all made from giving Hagler a tougher than expected fight.

I've been saying this very strongly in here of late, with much opposition :D

This is how I see it. Duran was tough and aggressive, an unwise strategy vs a bigger, stronger, and more durable opponent.

" The beast " does not get a lot of credit for skills, but for a while he was out boxing Marvin Hagler.

On the other hand Duran went 15 with a quicker, younger version of Hagler and was never in any real danger of being stopped. The "Beast" Mugabi as strong as he was was an easier target than Duran. I like Duran`s superior defense and RIng IQ here. He still had enough power to get anyone`s respect.

Mugabi was ruined by Hagler. So most people here are trying to compare the post Mugabi with the prime one. It is hard to say if he punched as hard as Hearns but he clearly had a better chin pre Hagler. In any case Mugabi as his peak would stopped Duran in a few rounds. Maybe slightly longer than Hearns took.

It is funny how people in these boxing love to act like Duran was some kind of boxing God. Hearns laid his butt out in 2 rounds. Unless you are saying Hearns had the greatest punch at that weight and had the most skill other fighters would of stopped him in a few rounds as well.

True, Duran was quickly waxed by one punch and also quit. He was however a great lightweight.

The mighty Mugabi, a one fight prime LOL. The guy only ever showed real durability against Hagler and even before that bout he was put on ***** street by the light hitting James Green.

Hearns is the greatest fighter to ever campain at 154 imo. He is also the most dangerous offensively. Jackson may have hit as hard or even harder but he is well below Hearns quality. Hearns for Duran was an outlier and never looked like happening either
before or after over umpteen years.

Anyone not recognising Duran's boxing skills even at the higher weight (when fighting straight forward opponents) really has no idea.

The fact still remains "Prime" Mugabi couldn't take Hagler`s punches for even 10 rounds while Duran was able to slip and slide for 15 rounds without a mark on him. He lost pretty close to Hagler. Defense, experience and counterpunching would be all in Duran`s favor.

By coincidence both were KOed in their very next fight after fighting Hagler.

    Mugabi would stop Duran late.

Your right Ken . makes you wonder how much it takes out some one fighting Marvin?. Even Leonard started getting dropped more after his win over Hagler.

I see Duran winning this. It is the kind of fighter Duran does well against. Duran did not do well against the fast technical great fighter, but he did well vs. the swinging puncher like Barkley or Mugabi.
