Fellas, I am doing my review of my '86 tape of "John Mugabi vs. Duane Thomas" for the vacant 154 lb. WBC title fought in Las Vegas and shown on Showtime with class acts Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy calling the action........ I'll make this short........ A win is a win, and a loss is a loss......... BUT!!! John Mugabi seemed in control right up until the third round in which he seemingly, by way of replay, took a wide hook shot from Duane Thomas and caught a thumb in his left eye-socket....... I do not think the overall punch is what hurt / stopped Mugabi.... I think Mugabi took a thumb or edge of the glove by Thomas into his eyeball..... That was a hard loss to cope with for John Mugabi........ Duane Thomas was gracious in his winnning effort in 1986, but he'd go on to lose his newfound WBC to Lupe Aquino on national TV in the summer of '87....... Many years later after his retirement from boxing, Duane Thomas was shot and killed by a punk-ass kid during a street incident........ Even a punk-ass kid can pull a trigger......... atsch:shock::bbb:deal MR.BILL:yikes
Well, '86 was rough for Mugabi..... He was stopped 2X by "Hagler and Thomas." The KO loss to Hagler was legit, but his TKO loss to Thomas was official but also sketchy...... Come 1989, Mugabi KO'd the French guy Rene Jacquot in ONE round and officially became a WBC champion at 154 pounds.... But then Mugabi got iced by Terry Norris in the spring of 1990 on TV....... :admin:rasta MR.BILL
I am pissed at Mugabi, he made me look stupid in front of my friends. We went to a Bruno fight in the early 90s, and I was wanking about Mugabi to them. But he goes and gets blown away in a round to some bum no one had ever heard of; Gerald McClellan if memory serves me right! You ever see the Jacquot KO? Weird, Rene actually broke/dislocated his ankle falling, and that caused the fight to be stopped. Coincidently the same way Bruno won his fight (again, I remember correctly), on the main event of Mugabi/McClellan.
Boozer, I have all this **** on tape, dude............... YES! After Mugabi got KO'd by Norris in '90, Mugabi went and got iced in ONE round by McClellan in 1991........ I gave up on that dude by then......... :hat MR.BILL
Yeah....... As did Leon Spinks, Jr....... atsch MR.BILL Alfredo Layne was shot dead too.......... Layne beat Willie Gomez in 1986 for the 130 lb. title....... Layne then dropped a decision to Pernell Whitaker.........
There was a punch in there that fractured his eye socket; that's why he freaked out and wouldn't continue. Incidentally, I believe Thomas also beat an up-and-coming Sumbu Kalambay.
Do you guys have the version of the fight that shows the long pre-fight? They show the Uppercut Mugabi hit Hagler with in slo-mo and it's just sick to watch Marvin's eyes roll up to the top of his head. It's exactly like a slot machine and then they roll back down & all you saw was the whites.
I saw it..and it was clean and simple..Mugabe, the frontrunner, who probaly shot his wad with Hagler s far as gutting it out and taking it like a man as well as dishing it out..was a victim of one of the unfortunate realities in boxing..that **** HAPPENS...he caught it in the eye and whirled around in pain and Duane Thomas, as the fine pro that he was, did what he was supposed to do...he took advantage of it in a fine, impressive manner, and won..deservedly so.
I got the whole card from Showtime......... "Haugen-Paul" was the co-event.................. Then Showtime did a profile of Manny Steward on his success as a manager / trainer at Kronk........ The network also did profiles' of both "Mugabi and Thomas."...... I got it all....... thumbsup MR.BILL
Off topic.... But what happened to Mugabi against Duane Thomas was similar to what happened to Livy Bramble from Ed Rosario also in '86....... Prior to Bramble being parked like a Cadillac in round 2, Bramble ate a thumb in his eye by Rosario's uppercut while covering against the ropes... I saw Bramble jump back for a second and he looked blinded...... Naturally Rosario turned on the gas and walloped Bramble to the floor to force the KO..... But Bramble ate about 10 to 12 shots after he took the thumb along the ropes.... When Bramble rosa at about the count of 10+, Bramble motioned he was blinded..... See the tape for proof...... atsch:shock: MR.BILL
Bramble claimed he was thumbed, but it's far from certain. I wouldn't be surprised that getting cut (I'd never seen him cut) panicked him. Regardless Rosario owned him that night and it was always going one way. Even if he did cop a thumb he should have been able to operate onward as thousands before him did. He claims he couldn't see? Rosario must have thumbed both eyes at once in that case. Throwing a punch back might have done him wonders.
I hear that, mate.... But........ I saw a thumb by Rosie hit near or at Bramble's eye in round 2 along the ropes....... Rosie threw an uppercut in which I think the thumb occurred..... I agree that Eddie Rosie won the fight / night, but Bramble was blinded for a moment or two..... I wish an immediate early '87 rematch would've occurred......... bbb I have the fight on tape..... I've reviewed it at least 100 X...... I believe Bramble took / ate a thumb from Eddie Rosie........ MR.BILL
I also wish Mugabi and Thomas fought a rematch in 1987 too......... Thomas won, but he got lucky with that freaky hook shot that caught Mugabi in the eye-socket...... IMO!! MR.BILL
