It would be a 154lb version of Hearns vs Cuevas.

I love Hearns, one of my 2 favourite fighters of all time (along with Nigel Benn), however those that think Mugabi in 1985/86 would have been blown away by Hearns are simply wrong. Maybe the 1990 version would have been blown away, but not the wrecking ball version in 1985/86.

As others have mentioned, he stood toe to toe with Hagler for 11 rounds, taking all of Haglers bombs - and at the same time, he is one of only 2 fighters that I can recall really staggering Hagler (Hearns being the other). If he can stagger someone with whiskers like Haglers at 160, then at 154, he could do some serious damage to Hearns.

For me this fight is either won on points by Hearns if he boxes as beautifully as he can or Mugabi wins by KO.

I feel strongly about this that Mugabi would not take Hearns punch well and would fold with a few rights. He committed to his punches and would be caught as he threw and I think he would crash. Hearns punched harder than Hagler. As Leonard has said.. and Roldan said and Duran demonstrated. Geraldo.

Using Hagler has a bencmark is a foolish thing to do. Hearns tended to start fast against dangerous opponents and would want to get the knockout before Mugabi warmed up and landed something big of his own.

You could also stretch that analysis to say that Mugabi punched harder than Hagler, and Hagler KO'd Hearns, therefore Mugabi KOs Hearns.

    Ifs, buts, maybes....

Mugabi was easy to hit and I can imagine Hearns lighting him up with the jab and right hand BUT one solid punch from Mugabi could tilt the balance in his favour, Hearns as we all know did not have a solid chin and Mugabi by all accounts was a MW who hit like a heavyweight.

Tough fight to pick I'll cautiously choose Hearns by 6th round KO.

Hearns would spark him in the first couple of rounds. Far better fighter.

I have to favor Hearns. Mugabi would be a live dog though. If he could take some punishment and get the fight to the middle rounds his chances look better.

    I wouldnt bet this fight.

Hearns was too much of a force at 154; one that Mugabi would not handle, in my opinion. The Hitman delivered his capabilities there, against a level of opposition superior to Mugabi.

I just can't imagine Mugabi bullying a Light Middleweight Hearns, as he had seemed to be doing against good, but not Hearns-level opponents.

The tough Mugabi receives a Hearns clinic, on his to being stopped.

Roldan punched harder than Hagler and what did that prove? Hearns proved much more than Mugabi in his career, and John flopped on all of his big moments. To say he could beat Hearns, when Hearns had much more power than Hagler is wishful thinking. Hearns would in all likelihood hit John with a right and John would be knocked out soon after.
