I was refering to Ali's greatness and quickness compared to the Weinerts and Wigginses and Brennans of this world, not to Greb himself. I'm not one of those who thinks Ali would blow out Greb. I think he might well stop him though, and have him on the floor a few times. As for Tunney, I'd give him a much better chance against Ali. I'd give Ali the Tunney who fought Tom Heeney, not the one who lost to Harry Greb.
Tunney would try and out-Ali Muhammad Ali. Greb wouldn't. That's why I think he does much better against Ali than Tunney would. Gene would be target practice. Ali could anticipate and time his every move. He couldn't do that with Greb, who was impossible to predict and even more impossible to time. The way to fight Greb was to go to his body (never Ali's strong point) because his head was such an evasive target.
If you fight 300 times, against sick competition, then being elusive is not enough to save your nose!
This is a solid point. Without seeing Greb, its hard to say if he had the skills and habits to trouble Ali.
This is not a solid point. This is a SILLY point. Harry Greb beat about 250 HOFamers and champions and contenders such as Mickey Walker, Gene Tunney, Tommy Gibbons, Kid Norfolk and top fighters of his time, MANY who can be seen on film still surviving today, and everyone of the writers of his time, raved about his amazing fighting abilities, and you are not yet satisfied ??? When a town is devastated by a typhoon, and the destruction is self evident to rescuers ,the aftermath of the typhoon speaks for ITSELF... Or do you MN think that all of Greb's victime suffered heart attacks in the ring ?. Greb's amazing record speaks of itself....
Resume speaks loudly. He's clearly great, and whats more, one of the greatest ever. But I can't say whether or not he gives Ali trouble, or how much, without seeing him. Styles, habits, etc. I could give a **** about writers, honestly. I've known plenty across several eras whose opinions I didn't respect, to say the least. For all we know he was MORE amazing than is written. Without seeing a shred of the guy, hard to tell for sure.
Mag, I already posted that I would not comment on an Ali/Greb fantasy fight. Let the great Greb rest on his laurels. A bridge too far giving away 55 lbs and 7 inches oif height. But all the truly great fighters many HEAVIER Hall of Famers he beat speaks more than enough of his greatness. Cheers.
Watch the many films that exist of Greb's opponents. Watch their speed and remember that Greb was considered faster than all of them. Watch the film of Benny Leonard, which clearly shows his speed. Then remember that Jack Dempsey felt that Harry was even faster than that. I think it's safe to say that Greb had amazing speed.
It was a joke, don't worry. There was a point in there though. He's clearly not some Willie Pep master of slipping punches. Acting as if he is is just adding more myth to the already worshipped demi-God. Ali would find the target if they fought. He was an incredibly accurate, fast puncher.
Greb was unquestionably a defensive genius. Remember that he was a volume-punching swarmer who was extremely difficult to hit. Comparisons to Pep are bad for more than one reason.
