For those who have not seen it, this is pretty interesting. If you want to win a bar bet, Ali even once lost a bout via TKO in one on cuts in 1957 to a boxer named Terry Hodge. Enjoy:

A fascinating post. I did not know Ali had more than 100 amateur fights.

    Many thanks!

In Jose Torres' book " Sting Like a Bee" he says Ali had 180 amateur fights. He also says that Ali had a third fight with Tony Madigan, one that shows in the record as being with Kent Green. I'll quote the paragraph from the book.
"In 1958, Cassius won the Louisville Golden Gloves light heavyweight crown and advanced to the quarter-finals in the Tournament of Champions in Chicago before suffering his first defeat, at the hands of Tony Madigan, who was later to meet him in a crucial bout in the 1960 Olympics.
He was hurt in the stomach, Martin recalls, and I signaled the referee to stop it. I didn't want the kid to get hurt unnecessarily."

I agree with some of his posts, chiefly those not concerning turn of the century fighters.

Mendoza, it makes no mention of Clay getting beat by percy price in the olympic trials at heavyweight before he went as light heavy. Have you any info on this?

I'll check. Another topic of interest is how close the gold medal match was.

You often have an ax to grind on accomplished white heavyweight, and remain obtuse toward many posters.

I read Jose Torres' book on Tyson years ago, and I remember there were a number of factual errors in the first chapter alone.

If Torres wrote that in the book about Ali, that's a big error.

I do know that when Ali regained the title from Spinks, there were articles published that Ali wanted to fight Kent Green again, because Green was the only man (to that point) who had ever stopped Ali. And he did so in 1958. And Green, who had a brief pro career and at that time lived in Chicago and was working in some job, had been in training because he wanted to fight Ali, too. I think they even had a big exhibition fight in 1979.

So I think Kent Green and Muhammad Ali - who talked about the fight Green stopped him in at length - knew more about it than Jose Torres did.

There's also a brief 3 minute documentary on Madigan (type Tony Madigan V Cassius Clay) which also states he only fought Clay twice (1959 and 1960) - and lost both. (They even have clips and an interview with Madigan after the pre-Olympic loss.)

There are also newspaper reports from 1958 the following day who say Green beat Clay.

The only person who apparently has confused a black light heavy/heavyweight from Chicago with a white light heavyweight from Australia was Jose Torres.
