Two truly great heavyweights both at their respective physical peaks. Who would win this matchup for the ages and why?

Ali pulls out a very hard fought close decision over the last few rounds.

Ali. Holmes was great but I think Ali's fluidity and superior lateral movement would prove the difference. Decision for Ali.

If Holmes has never sparred with Ali, then I take Ali.

But, if Holmes has had serious sparring with Ali, then Ali's edge is gone,
and Holmes more powerful jab wins the day.

Interesting take on this. Although Holmes did have the physical tools such as a superior jab to trouble Ali I still would pick a prime Ali to beat him. In 1967, Ali's skills were positively extraordinary and even getting better. He was a ring genius the likes that had not been seen up until that time. The only thing close since was probably the Kid Dynamite version of Tyson from 1985 to 1989.

I pick Ali to slip Holmes vaunted jab and outduel Holmes for a 15 round UD.

I speak about the heavyweight division. Sugar Ray robinson was the preminent ring genius of all time as a welterweight. Even Ali admited that.

Like others I'd pick Ali to take charge down the home stretch. I think he was just a whisker to quick, and moved around a little to well for Larry.

I'll take Holmes in this one.

Holmes had all the tools that gave even a prime Ali the most problems.

Jesus what id give to see that. Holmes is a fantastic fighter with very few *****s in his armour but a 67 Ali was a delight to watch. A poetic genius (and i do mean genius, which is a vastly overused term nowadays but apt in this case) who had everything. I cant see ANY fighter beating this version of Ali. Ali UD

I'll take the Ali of 1967 to prevail over the Holmes of 1978, but not 1982. The difference? Larry had Ritchie Giachetti in 1978, and Eddie Futch for Cooney and Cobb in 1982. Giachetti was a fine trainer, but Futch understood how to deal with Ali better than any other opposing strategist (including Angelo Dundee, who didn't have much success seconding Jimmy Ellis against him).

Ali circa 1967 would simply be too fast for Holmes. He would win by clear, yet hard fought decision.

Oh no . I knew it would cum. I can't believe so late though.
The thread was already made , but threads here actually do get lost.
Now the most are going to say Ali , a few will say too close , and even fewer are going to (try to) surprise and say Holmes. And I find it hard to believe even most of the good posters here can explain why either man is going to win this.
