Look up some fights from dempsey then if you dont belive me. Ive seen him break he's opponents jaw,two ribs, cut him up and the ref still didnt stop the fight. Todays heavyweight can barely go 12 rounds you idiot, of course they were tougher in the old days

Not to campare the two but they'd do that to Roy Jones too, does that mean they're more skilled?
You mention Tyson, Tyson had a hardon for Jack Dempsey.

Ali is exactly right, but the fetishists here won't want to hear it. I saw a tape of a fight between Jimmy McLarnin and Tony Canzoneri on ESPN not long ago and they were awful. I mean AWFUL. Hands waist high, wild crazy wide swings, bodies spinning completely around until their backs were to the opponent when they missed... JMM would have absolutely obliterated either one of them, they couldn't even spar with him. Say that on the board though, and watch people just lose their ****ing minds with indignation. It's hilarious.

IMO, Dempsey is a better overall fighter than Joe Frazier. Dempsey's skills are highly underrated today. As you point out, he was one of the originators of bobbing and weaving in the ring and was quite advanced for his era. I have little doubt that if Dempsey were active in the 60s-70s, he could beat Frazier.

Oh yeah, obviously he was so skilled and powerful that 40 lbs wouldn't make a difference at all against Smoking Joe Frazier, Olympic gold medalist who had been boxing since the day he was born

You can assure that old time boxers were in much better shape then today's boxers? That's like saying medicine and science was more advanced last century. No way any boxer back then was as in good a shape as say Wladimir Klitschko or David Haye are today :-(

As far as Ali "wiping the floor' with Dempsey?.....maybe so but how good a boxer was Chuck Wepner? He took Ali into the last second of the 15th rnd.

How would the Dempsey that destroyed Willard have done against the Buster Douglas that destroyed Tyson? :huh

I always hate these historical comparisons because it can only be argued till the cows come home and can never be proven. In a nutshell Ali's comments are just Ali being Ali :!:

If you don't think Dempsey knew anything about boxing, you're wrong.

    Read his book.

He was the original swarming style fighter. It was crude, but he laid the groundwork for an entire school of boxing in some ways similar the way Ali changed outboxing.

Buster Douglas would have annihilated him. So would Chuck Wepner. Both of them would have been absolute unsolvable riddles to guys from that era, especially Douglas, who on any given day could elevate his game to a ridiculous level of excellence.

We know what happens when someone gets hit a solid shot with tiny gloves because of the UFC. If the shot is technically sound and lands flush, you're going to sleep. When you point out how many shots the old timers took with those little gloves, you're not saying anything good about their punching technique, and NO, human beings have not devolved weaker chins in the last hundred years.

I like how people are saying that Dempsey would fold under the size difference when he was renowned for brutally KTFOing larger opponents like Willard and especially Firpo.

If you are gonna make ridiculous comments implying Dempsey couldn't carry Frazier's jockstrap, at least do some research so you are aware that Dempsey's typical weight is about 10 pounds less than Frazier's, not 40!

I stand by what I said. Dempsey would destroy Frazier ala Foreman. It would be a war for as long as it lasted though.

You're more than welcome to stand by your idiotic statement, I think that just makes it more hilarious.

Also, Dempsey's gloves were probably loaded against Willard.

    LOL You're the ****in idiot!

You said fighters were in BETTER SHAPE, which is what I addressed. I don't give a **** if Dempsey smashed up some talentless pug in the 20's. The bottom line is he gets ***** slapped by every heavyweight champion worth a ****!

    Spastic!
