Yep, Gene Tunney, who weighed in as a super middleweight a year before their fight. It's always a good time watching the classic forum geeks trying to justify their weirdness in the main forum.

Ali would have beaten Dempsey in a wide decision or stoppage.

I never said Dempsey would beat Ali by any means, only that you guys refuse to give him(or Tunney) for that matter the proper respect. Whatever...

    Exactly!

I'm a huge fan of Louis and Robinson because they had a high skill level but when you start throwing Dempsey, Willard, Sharkey and **** in there you lose me!

He is right. In that state? He would whoop either of them. Badly.

In the same breath you would have to compensate for nutrition, size, and development of the sport of boxing.

Questions like that are impossible to answer, but I think it is safe to say that Ali could whip just about anyone at HW in his prime. He just moved to well for a guy of his size.

when your a heavyweight and you go 25 rounds and fight two times a month, then of course he's in better shape then todays heavyweights.

    Dear Friends
    kind regards
Here are the fights of Jack Dempsey that should help people decide if Muhammad Ali was right in his analysis.

    Jack Dempsey versus Jess Willard.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3BTycNuY44&feature=player_embedded[/ame]

    Jack Dempsey versus Bill Brennan.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFxcNfXMA60[/ame]

    Jack Dempsey versus Georges Carpentier.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz3VFPJmLFA[/ame]

    Jack Dempsey versus Tommy Gibbons.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdCcMZZoVMY[/ame]

Jack Dempsey vs Luis Angel Firpo.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NN0vGHnCLo[/ame]

I think that the difference between the fighters of that era was the fact that they had more stamina and durability than the boxers of today.
However, the boxers of today likely have more skill than the boxers of Dempsey's era.
I think that Dempsey was very skilled for his time and would have readily adapted to the changes in style that are apparent today.
I doubt that today's heavyweights could go fifteen rounds much less twenty rounds so no praise is intended for them.
    yours thankfully
    John

Klit's or Lewis KO's Ali in 9 rds.

Truth is there's greater gap been boxers of today and 40 years ago than there was between boxers of the 1960-1970 and 1920-30's. The recent huge advancements in "nutrition," training, and ability to study film are the reason. But just wait for the gene doping if you really want to see something.

Of course one of you will say that this is really stupid and that you saw SRR and he was incredible.

Dempsey is simply too small, it's irrelevant how skilled he is, I think either Klitschko **** his world up. That being said, Ali would damn sure **** him up, no disrespect to Dempsey, I'm not trying to run the man down, as I respect his place in history and I respect his place in boxing but the bottom line is dude doesn't have the sheer force to stand up to today's heavy's.

It's definitely clear that Ali would have boxed his way to an easy UD. I think Dempsey could probably take out Wlad though, break that egg chin into pieces.

No I don't particularly rate Willard. But I also think Frazier is quite overrated, mostly by Ali fans. Many of the greats would knock him out. Ever seen his fight with journeyman Ron Stander. Stander had him rocked in round 4. If Dempsey got one of his thunderous shots in - just one - Frazier would be a out of there just like he was against Foreman.

Ali trash talking. I'm pretty sure he'd have a much different opinion today. This was in the time where racial tensions and resentment were at an all time high. I really don't think Dempsey would be a bum today. Ali himself got 2 scares by a lesser fighter in Henry Cooper and I really doubt Cooper was a better puncher than
Dempsey was. Another thing. Any real boxing fan will tell you some of the most skillful fighters came from the older generations. Yes, they are skilled today, but no one is going to make me believe their is a fighter today more skilled than Willie Pep, Benny Leonard, or Sugar Ray Robinson just to name a few. The era or technology has nothing to do with will to learn and master a discipline.
