Toney actually has a lot of respect for the old time greats. He says he learned many of his tricks from watching films of Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles.

Mayweather on the other hand stated that he was greater than Sugar Ray Robinson and that he never lost to a lightweight like Leonard did (and brought up Hector Camacho :-().

Ali simply had his "The Greatest" act on but he did always say that Ray Robinson was the greatest pound for pound.

ohh sorry yes toney does have a lot of respect for the old timer fighters....i just mentioned him and mayweather because they get mentioned a lot when the topic of **** talking comes up lol
but ali did it..."he is a showman"

and the guy who called me a noob....your the fcuking noob, what i have seen every fighter being taken apart on this fourm so why can't i do that to ali....

i do think both guys were great fighters...but it's funny that no one addressed
the points i made about the weakness of ali as a boxer....

but yeah sorry that kind of thing is censored right....

You called Ali a joke, then make no valid argument. That is why everyone is starting to dump on you. You made more of an Ali was acting like a hypocrite argument than an Ali is a joke discussion.

Many posters here rank Ali as their top ever heavyweight, or somewhere there about. Calling him a joke without a substantive argument may get you called worse than "noob" before the day is out.

Ali talked out of his ass. He had a big mouth and was full of himself. He got caught up in his own hype and the frenzy that the whole world was throwing at him, and it went to his head. He said he was the Greatest, and though a good bit of that was to pump up the gate, I do think that except for in his quietest moments he believed it. But on this count Ali was not unique; a healthy dose of self delusion enables a fighter to do what he shouldn't be able to do. Ali was the first fighter to be so entertaining in front of the cameras; articulate! when the mainstream public believed every fighter had to speak like Slapsy Maxie Rosenbloom. I doubt even Slapsy Maxie spoke like Slapsy Maxie Rosenbloom. Ali, to the stereotyping public, was an anomaly. He had to be some kind of a miraculous freak to not speak in the Grazianoesque "dems" and "dese"s. And egged on by ratings whores like Cosell, at times Ali went too far, beyond what I'd bet he could justify once the cameras and the lights went dark. But it was his mouth and his looks, (he was, as he never let us forget, "Pretty"), his humor, (Young Ali was a funny guy), his charisma, (this guy rose above the mundane, the predictable, and did it both in and out of the ring)...

But all of this would be for naught, if he couldn't fight. But he could fight. He backed it up, when it mattered. Poor technique, even the casual fight fan knew it. Not much of a hook, he slapped at times? Yes, this and more. But he won, mostly he won. Like Dempsey, like Louis and Marciano, he beat the best of his time. For all the hero worshipping and the hero bashing, like Dempsey, Ali will remain one of the greatest to ever lace 'em up. Not too bad, right? Who amongst us wouldn't be flattered and in fact fulfilled to be considered one of the best to do what we do, whatever it is that we do?

i agree with the last poster 100 percent, ali was one of the greatest to ever done it
    and so was dempsey,

i do not think ali was a joke as a fighter but dempsey was no joke too.
but in all fairness if he gets to call other all time greats a joke, why is it such a big
sin to call him the same term....

and what argument do i have to call him a joke.....the same argument that he made when calling guys like dempsey, baer etc a joke....
this argument being that when he watches them on film, he sees a lot of mistakes and weakness....well i did the same to him, watched him on film and pointed out
    weakness in his style....

you may say he got away with and fought many great fighters....and this is true...
but this is also true for the other fighters whose techique he makes fun of.

but if he can nit pick at them, why not nit pick at him

Well, I'm a self-professed Ali fan. I love a boxer and for a HW he did it as well as any. His poor technique was always seen as a strength, however. He kept his hands low because it freed him up. He slapped and threw out love tap jabs more to find his distance, but they'd be counted as scores, and he knew that. If every great fighter in the history of the game can be credited for advancing the game, then Ali contributed as much to the effort as any ever did. A joke? Of course not. A jokester? Oh yeah, and one of the most entertaining ever. Don't you wish we had more like him? Don't all of us wish we had one like him. The guys who have tried to emulate him either in or out of the ring have paled in comparison.

Younger stylists tend to praise historical stylists, while younger knockout artists tend to praise historical knockout artists.

Does anybody know what opinions Ali expressed about Marciano's abilities before actually sparring with Rocky? If Muhammad had had a similar experience with Dempsey, he might have been surprised.
