He's the best heavyweight boxer of the last 130 years or so. Pound for pound he probably deserves to be in the top 10-20 boxers of that period too. But when you start thinking about how big fighting is and how long ever means, then you start having to think about samurai, and knights, legionaires, gladiators, snipers, duelists, fencers. If we stick to hand to hand then there have always been great wrestlers and men who were excellent martial artists. If we stick strictly to boxing, then we have to take account of the periods in the past when bare knuckle boxing was the norm, or when people used a cestus instead of a boxing glove. He dominated boxing in the decade of his prime: the 60s. Most people would say that he was the best fighter of that era, although I could see an argument in favor of Eder Jofre. He continued to do great things into the 70s, Duran's era. He accomplished more than most, always took the hardest fights, and he made it look effortless. He had style, charisma, dedication, fortitude, guts, and a commitment to excellence that extended beyond the ring. He definitely deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest fighters who ever lived.
Ali transcends the sport of Boxing. That said his accomplishments & resume considering the bullshizz forced layoff & all other obsticles in front of him. Ali is easily interchangeable in the top 5.
No..not even top 10. He lost 3 times to Norton, never gave Foreman a rematch, lost to Leon Spinks and almost got ko,d by Cooper ! Also the second Liston "fight"was a fraud.
Muhammad Ali is the greatest because he said so. Whether he actually is #1 or not is irrelevant as to the question of if he is "the greatest" Now Floyd tries his knock-off version of "The best ever"
There is a rumor that a lot of the reason the Nation of Islam's lawyers fought so hard to keep Ali out of prison in the 60's was because there was a young man at Leavenworth at that time named Rakim Oaks. You draw your own conclusions.
There is no such person that existed for Ali or Mike Tyson. In fact if it is true he would have been 65 years old when he fought Tyson in 1991 if he was in prison when Ali was young.
