Ali-Young got you hooked on boxing, really??? I reckon it was his worst fight (aside from Holmes when he was virtually without a pulse) and in the autumn years of his career he had some shockers.Evangelista, the Spinks rematch and even the third Norton fight were all boring imo.
"Ali-Young" was indeed boring, but at age 10 and getting a chance to see Ali in the ring for the first time, was enough to get me hooked on Ali.... But '76 was the year that got me going in boxing...... :thumbsup MR.BILL
It may have been boring...Young may have been a negative fighter...he may have stuck his head outside of the ring...Ali may have been uninspired...but one thing remains true..all that stuff didn't really matter...Jimmy Young won that fight and deserved to be crowned heavyweight champion..he was robbed.
I'm sorry, after tonights review of the fight, Young stunk bad in my opinion. Yes, of course Ali looked off key; he wasn't motivated for Young at 230 pounds... But the slender and tuned Young was way too passive, defensive and hid in between the ropes too often. This is NOT the way to win or take a title from a solid champ like Ali... Yes, again, Young was skilled and could box, but his fight with Ali was a high-profiled sparring match of 15 rds... YAWN! Howard Cosell used his fake tone of voice to TRY and make the fight sound more exciting than it really was... It was dull... Ali U.D. 15 Young without doubt....:deal MR.BILL:hat:dead
I loved it when Jimmy Young was laughing at Ali. Ali looked like a 'Clumsy Dancing Bear', trying to dance and flick out a harmless no power jab. The judges, absolutely pathetic,,,,,,,,,,,,No Way Ali Won That Fight. Look at Angelo Dundee and Rudy Clay during that fight,,,,,that's all you need to look at!
And how did Patterson, Folley and Ellis do? Hell, if it was that easy, past prime versions of Moore and Mathis should at least have given Ali trouble, no? I had it a draw. I think Ali was given the benefit of a doubt both in this and in Norton III, but neither was a robbery in my opinion.
The fight did suck long dick no doubt, but hell will freeze over before I crown Jimmy Young champ... WORD! ALI, ALI, ALI!!! MR.BILL:hat
I like Young in a way. It's always nice with HWs as slick as he was, even if he was a bit too cautious. But he has been given this almost hero status here by some. I can understand why some think he deserved more from the Ali fight, but Norton beat him fair and square. Don't understand how that has become a robbery in the ESB folklore.
Is it gay of me to be a bit excited about JohnThomas and Conteh posting here again? EDIT: That should read "how gay is it of me..."
I thought Young got excessive credit for doing better than expected, while Ali got rightfully blasted for his poor condition. Anyhow I gave Young the first three rounds, and round 14. I had Ali sweeping all rounds from four to 13 on initiative, and would have given him round 12 10-8 on the ten point system (not sure how a referee ruled knockdown is typically scored on the five point system in place for that one, but a 5-3 round would be magnified over the impact of a 10-8 margin), and only had the final round even. If my extrapolation of a 5-3 round 12 in favor of Ali is correct, then my card matches the 71-64 card of judge Terry Moore. The Ali of the Dunn fight would have beaten the Young who challenged him in Landover pretty handily. Ali-Young was Jimmy's to win, and he blew a golden opportunity to exploit poor conditioning.
That's the crux of the matter. A robbery is when the losing fighter on the cards was streets ahead,in reality. Norton in their third one,and Young may have been given the short straw on close decisions, but they definitely WERE NOT streets ahead of Ali.
