If anything,,,,,,,,,,,,,,A Draw would have been suffice. And the harder and crsiper punches, were landed by Little Jimmy Young. An immediate rematch should have been set,,,,,,,,,
Ali wanted no more of Jimmy Young...but what could Young do about it? Jimmy always had to take on 4 men at once...his in the ring opponent and the three judges.
This has grown into a myth. I don't see any long reigning, undisputed HW champion ever losing such a fight on the judges' cards. And no way in hell did he win against Norton. EDIT: For example I think Spinks won decisvely over Holmes in the first fight, but had Holmes won one more round he would have kept his title. It was that close, even though I think Spinks was far more convincing in this fight than Young was against Ali.
I mean really,,,,,,Ali takes on Richard Dunn next. Remember that televised 'fall down event'. Didn't Little Jimmy knock out Dunn a few years earlier,,,,,,,,, Dunn went down faster than the 'Bismark', after a few British Battleship bomb-shells.
A bit of Jimmy Trivia for yer. Did you know that most ringsiders had Billy Aird winning his fight with Young in 1973 (officially a draw)? And i'm not just saying that because Billy is a Scouser. :hey

Norton III was a clear robbery and I'm not even a Norton fan, I'm an Ali one. I didn't see the Ellis and I don't remember the Folley fight but Patterson had little moments in the first fight and made a very good account of himself in the rematch. Much better than Liston. Moore still made Ali work for the stoppage and wasn't an easy opponent. Mathis? meh I didn't see that one. Lol, I love Young too but he could've been a bit more aggressive too. Still, he got robbed against Ali and I am a fan of both. I also can't see how people score his fight with Norton for Norton but I'll score that again and I'll write or type stuff next time. I only did it by rounds but thought Jimmy edged it in a close fight though he gave away the last round.
Patterson was badly outclassed in the first fight, but gave a better account of himself in the second. Ellis, Moore and Mathis were all easy wins. Folley had his moments, but were in the end out of his depth. Actually, Liston would also qualify as one of the most technically skilled fighters Ali fought. I do agree, though, that fighters who brought pressure, had a high workrate and were skilled counter punchers were troublesome for Ali. Speaks well for Louis chances in a hypothetical match-up, except for the fact that he himself had problems with skilled movers, of course.
There are a few Ali fights I have never seen & there are a few that Ive been advised not to watch.... the Ali-Young fight fits both descriptions, as does the Holmes & Berbick fights.
Moore showed solid defense and Ali had to work for the ko. Ali won that cleanly, clearly, and solidly but it was no piece of cake stopping Moore though Moore was ancient. Patterson had small moments in the first fight very far inbetween but did well near the end and fought better in the rematch. Liston was technically sharp but he never did better than Patterson of the rematch with Ali. I don't remember the other fights but I will watch his fight with Folley again. Louis/Ali is a dream fight where any man could win but I think Louis would have a higher chance to win than most would give him.
Young's sticking his head out through the ropes was a bad, bad move and he could've been DQ'd or docked some points for it. He got away with it, but it didn't impress. He definitely landed the crisper shots. Ali had tricked all of his opponents between Frazier III and Spinks I to take it easy on him, and it worked. If YOung had stepped it up, he'd have won easily. I still thought he won, but he could've been a lot braver. I actually respect all the Young fans on this site...it's nice to see a non-champ get his due. But Jimmy was really only a top-notch figher for a very, very brief period. He was thrown to the wolves early and paid for it, then lost his desire after Norton and paid severely for that, too. I hear he's highly ranked in the after-life, though.
