What motive would Foreman have to put that in his book? He was already rich and successful and moved on with his life. Perhaps George wrote that because it was true. Dick Saddler certainly not above reproach. I don't know that he poisoned Foreman's water but again the perception stinks. Alexis Arguello threw Eddie Futch under the bus after being stopped by Aaron Pryor. Blames him for the loss. I don't recall Eddie joining Pryor's entourage and yelling Hawk Time cause he needed a buck. Whether Alexis apologized or not he would never have done that.
Foreman earned $5 million for the fight in Zaire. Not to mention % he got for Frazier, Roman and Norton. Shouldn't have been hurting. I'm sure Ali did it to tweak Foreman's frail mind we can agree on that. Why would Dick Saddler be desperate to go with Ali when he was just coming off trying a boxer to the world championship? He would have boxers wanting his services.
How would we know? How other world class boxers did he train after that? Did Foreman accused Gil Clancy of foul play in Puerto Rico? We can go round and round with this. Again I'm saying the perception is terrible and shows what kind of person Dick Saddler was. Whether he directly did something sinister impossible to know but he's character looks suspect. Saddler called Foreman "a bum". Who's the bum?
Don't be rude. It's a perfectly valid opinion. In 76, George was only just returning and wasn't sure what fighting style he needed to use. Against Ali, he may have tried to pace himself as he did with Joe second time around and, later, Young. In which case Ali may have used the slower tempo and been able to outbox him and get rounds in the bag. George would have been reluctant to flail away again and, in a boxing scenario, Ali vs an unsure Foreman who was trying out new things while mentally still psyched could well lead to an Ali points decision for me. I agree with @djanders and a few others and, even if I didn't, I'd be a bit less chippy in my response. I think you owe him an apology. He is a well-respected poster and a few people have agreed with him. I see your post was liked by @Kosst Amojan which really should tell you all you need to know.
Why would you tweet this about someone who poisoned you and then called you a bum: This content is protected
he didn´t. it was a provocative question. just wanted to hint at the fact that, during that time frame, even rather light hitting "movers" with good technical skills (like jimmy young) were able to floor big george. if jimmy was able to do it, i don´t think ali would have needed "poisoned water" to do the same. sounds like a rationalizing excuse from george to me, who couldn´t believe what had happened to him in 1974.
Even Foreman 2. 0 struggled with movers. He needed a gift against Axel Schulz . Harold Lederman had it 117-111 Schulz. George was stripped of his IBF title for refusing to give him a rematch. And Tommy Morrison who wasn't even a mover became a mover for that one fight and defeated Foreman 2.0.
Apparently Ali was one of those boxers. His own guy accused him of poisoning him. Why wouldn’t he look elsewhere? How do you work with someone after that? And if you’re taking on other boxers, why would you turn down the (a) biggest earner in the sport and (b) the heavyweight champion of the world? However much he made off Foreman, he would still want income. If the guy is accusing him of that sort of thing he’s moving on anyway. Why would he not move on to the next job?
You’re talking about two time frames removed by decades. George was looking for excuses after the Ali loss. For whatever reason he settled on Saddler. He’s in a different place today. He probably realizes that was wrong and foolish and no longer believes he was poisoned.
It seems there are posters in this thread who still lend credence to the poison conspiracy. I cited that tweet in the hope of disabusing them of that notion. I would add George revisited his poison conspiracy this century.
Let's take a look at Ali's record around that time plus and minus a year: 1975 Chuck Wepner Won KO 15 Ron Lyle Won KO 11 Joe Bugner Won UD 15 Joe Frazier Won KO 14 1976 Jean Coopman Won KO 5 Jimmy Young Won UD 15 Richard Dunn Won KO 5 Ken Norton Won UD 15 1977 Alfredo Evangelista Won UD 15 Ernie Shavers Won UD 15 And George Foreman's: 1975 Inactive 1976 Ron Lyle Won KO 5 Joe Frazier Won KO 5 Scott LeDoux Won KO 3 John Dino Denis Won KO 4 1977 Pedro Agosto Won KO 4 Jimmy Young Lost UD 12 I'm going with Muhammad Ali by UD during 1976, yes.
Muhammad Ali Vs Figher of the Year 1976. No rematch? Before Jimmy Young 1977. I think that has damaged boxing history, as well as boxing fans.
