There are plenty of contradictory accounts of that fight, Boucher. I don't really care though - it was what it was. Anyone actually drawing conclusions about a 15 round title fight with a fully-fledged HW based upon the info they can gather on the O'Brien fight...I'd only say, that's a little rash.
Ali, for me. Johnson was, more often than not, a defense first type of fighter. He stood flat footed, and at times, just waited. Ali would peck, and peck, and peck, and score points. He wouldn't hurt Jack or even do much damage, but would outwork and outscore him in a landslide. Speed, reach, mobility, and that long, snapping jab.
The fight would be boo'ed so loud, the noise from Havava would reach the winter vacationers in Miami Beach. Much like watching paint dry............ Or two snails crawling........
Yeah Il Duce, yeah, Ali was boring and **** and he was a thief. We know. Forget the fact that these are two of the greatest characters in HW ring history, and two of it's most natural athletes...forget the fascinating clash of personalities and styles and flap your gums like the only possible outcome is boredom for all concerned. Because it's the only negative you can come up with because you know Ali is favourite. I personally think it wouldbe a hoot. Loads of fun.
I totally agree, I was just rebutting Seamus 's remark and the constant strident pronouncements that O Brien was the victor , offered by our resident Johnson hater, who shall of course be nameless.
For me, it reads like a draw, very close. But that doesn't tell the whole story - O'Brien was bleeding and being broken down by the end of the sixth.
It's hard to accurately measure Johnson's greatness because his fight films don't necessarily show his handspeed and footspeed based on the technology of the time. His uppercuts were quick on the inside and it's not like he would always wait for his opponents to make mistakes and counter. He would jab in, jab out, tie up his opponents, feint and parry a lot of shots. The real test would be how fast he'd counter Ali and nullify his attacks. Ketchel wasn't the fastest middleweight but he wasn't slow either and Jack toyed with him despite the pre-fight agreement that it would be a show. One thing is for sure, Ali never danced for fifteen rounds straight as much as some say he was always dancing in his first reign. The power advantage likely falls to Johnson whereas the footspeed probably favours Ali.
You really think this fight would be a HOOT....... I do agree, Ali would win here if anyone,,,,,but 12 rounds would be even. Ali would clown, Jack would clown,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Rematch anyone,,,NOT:hi:
Well there would definitely be a rematch, even if the fight was a clean knock out or shut out there would be a rematch. That's what happens when two superstar boxers fight in the same division. Likely, there would be a trilogy. I think they would all be great fun.
There are many reports to the contrary. The fact remains O'Brien should not have lasted that distance, let alone been anywhere close to Johnson in a decision. Were this an anomaly in his performance history I wouldn't bring it up.
Not saying Johnson would win, but if there's anybody in the history of heavyweight boxing who would have the best chance of exploiting Ali's technical frailties when comes to being counter jabbed it's Johnson (even more so than Norton showed it).
