There were drastic differences in rules, time regulation, glove size and other things between those two eras. I guess it depends on what specific set of circumstances they agreed to fight under. With no other knowledge to go with, I’m going to blindly pick Muhammad Ali to outpoint Jack Johnson. I think his considerable speed, work rate, and durability would keep him on top of Jack.

Ali wins over 15 on points. But if Muhammed had being around at the same Era as Jack and fighting the same level of opposition etc then it's a lot closer imo.

Johnson beat no body to compare to Ali anyone who has seen film of the two wouldn't make this thread with an ounce of serious curiosity.

Are you hoping someone here has some hidden knowledge you cannot see for yourself on film?

I don’t think Johnson beats Ali based on the film I’ve seen.

However, analyzing Johnson style from the film, I see a tall, strong, aggressive fighter that stands coiled ready for his opponent to throw a punch and then jumps in to maul with combinations.

Because Jacks hands are so low Ali would land his jab consistently, however I see Ali being pressed against the ropes a lot and being forced to fight Jack off.

I give Ali a clear decision but never easy because Johnson was in tremendous shape and mentally tough as the come.

Terrell was pretty close stylistically. Not quite the athlete Jack was though.

Not nearly as good inside fighter though and clearly slower. Probably the closest to Johnson, but still far from him.

I don't know who I would call closest to Ali among Johnson opponents.

Johnson is short by today's standards and contary to your belief he was a safety first counter puncher who prefered to sit on the backfoot and potshot.

Johnson was the best of his era, but boxing moved on.
