Yeah maybe that's a bit harsh on Jean's big brother, but he could have gone for it a bit more in the Ali contest for me when he'd fallen so far behind.
Good summing up of Joe 'I never give ANYONE two black eyes' Bugner's attitude in all too many of his bouts that he should done better in. He had the ability to do so. I always liked him. He could be quite a character at times and seemed a gent on the whole. I remember being really annoyed during the Ron Lyle fight - Joe could have won that quite clearly had he upped his workrate. And losing to Jack Bodell!! No disrespect to Jack but Bugner should have handled that job easily.
Ha ha, this reminds me of the scene in Reggie Perrin, where the great Leonard Rossiter (a top Evertonian, by the way) has two black eyes and his boss at the farm asks him how we got them...he says: "It was the wife sir, she went mad, thought she was Joe Bugner". His boss replies: "When did Joe Bugner ever give anyone two black eyes?". Funny, I was reading Boxing News review of the Lyle fight the other day and they're so annoyed with Joe's efforts to try and 'win', not last the distance, which was the oft-criticism aimed at him back then.
Yeah,it was the Reggie Perrin scene that I had in mind. Great series. Poor Joe's not well nowadays. Living in a nursing home because of Alzheimers. His son,Joe Jr,says that his dad thinks that Marlene, his widow, has just popped out to the shops. Never knew Leonard was an Evertonian. That club have been well and truly stitched up re that points deduction. "Financial irregularities" are not the fault of the team, manager or supporters. I really hope that they survive the drop and,if they maintain their present form, they will do. I know that John Conteh is an Evertonian. When I had the pleasure of meeting him just over a year ago,he said to quite a few of us,more than once "I don't like football. I support Everton!" Really good bloke to chat to and I'll be seeing him again at a meet & greet next month.
Spot on. 20th Century bust have been born at the end of the 20th Century because we all know there is Chronological age and there is boxing age. Every fighter is different in that regard. Tyson was a year younger than Lewis but in chronological age but in boxing age was much older. When Lewis turned pro Tyson had already unified, destroyed Spinks and showed signs of slippage against Bruno.
Gritty performance for a washed fighter. As to Bugner it had to affect him that he killed a man in the ring. Also, the fact he liked Ali so much robbed him of his aggression: Muhammad Ali death: Aussie icon Joe Bugner reminisces about the funny times he spent with the boxing legend (foxsports.com.au)
Yeah, harsh on the Toffees but the points deduction had given us seige mentality. We were bottom of the league two weeks ago... and what a turnaround since. Yeah, Conteh, top fella and a great laugh,
In this I differ - While Holmes has a great jab, he was vulnerable to right hands. Lennox had a few variations of the right hand and a long reach. I see Lennox connecting against Holmes and scoring the stop. Holmes best chance would be later rounds, but I don't think he gets there vs Lennox. Holmes may be reluctant with the jab because Lennox could counter with the right hand (Holmes Kryptonite) Lennox also had a good left, Holmes was quicker, but the RIGHT HAND IS KEY HERE!
I heard one of Dunn's team put cling film on the toilet seat Bugner was going to use (covering the gap that things pass through, if you get my drift), and that really riled Bugner. I don't know if it's true, but Bugner definitely looked very angry. When Bugner fought Winston Allen, he was going through the motions, as usual, when Allen headbutted him. A few seconds later, Bugner flattened the guy. In other words, if Bugner got angry he reacted in the same way a lot of big, strong men react when provoked.
