    He wasn't.

In exhibitions against people who weren't boxers, Ali always went down. The Mayor of Atlanta, children, etc.

He was holding an exhibition in Venezuela. He faced two boxers. Then he challenged the referee, who was this guy.

Of course, the ref floors him.

Ali getting dropped here looks about as legit as the rounds McGregor "won" vs Mayweather

McGregor is the one who went on a campaign saying he would beat any boxer in the world. I don't recall Mayweather claiming anything similar

sort yes your right in a way
    however
one Mcgregor's own base is boxing, that is his base sport if you look up his childhood
and yes his claims about beating anyone was clearly made to get richer. which worked

2nd its just annoying mayweather went from cherry picking opponents to
going against guys who dont even box full time

like that Japanese kickboxer kid half his size that he went against in a boxing match
and still talked like he did something after.

Conor's boxing background not that deep. There are several other UFC fighters with stronger boxing backgrounds than him who do not go around saying they can easily beat pro boxings best. He just straight talked himself into a money fight. I don't blame him, but he is the one who actively campaigns himself as a world class professional boxer

Floyd is taking these one off gimick fights post 40 years old and he's not really trying to sell them as real fights to boxing fans. He did in a way vs Connor but as you said conor is a top pro athelete and there was a ton of money to be made so I can understand that just a little but I've never seen him say he can best these guys at their own sports. Just my take
