Guys with top left hooks floored Ali and hurt him. We know this. IMO Jeffries was equal of an athlete of Ali himself, stronger and more durable than Frazier, and could have beaten Ali on points. No spoilers here, you'll have to hear the broadcast to and opinions of the old timers to see how it went down.

Its too bad Norton and Young didn't correctly win the fights they lost vs. Ali. It would be very interesting to see what his legacy would be like if these decisions were flipped. A foreman re-match could have gone either way.

Ali suing shows how petty he was back then.

A seldom know fact, Ali never changed his last name to Ali. It was always Clay. Ali went over the line on how he treated Frazier and many of his opponents.

Even so, it was clearly something Ali detested and considered disrespectful, as evident in the infamous Ernie Terrell fight.

I have all the broadcasts in my favourites. I first had them on an LP record several decades ago.I don't need spoilers.

I think he lost 60. Ali jabbed off his toupee 3 times, the last Marciano came in & nailed him to the gut for real & offered to make it a real fight.

    Ali never did that again.

But they did talk about touring the country & speaking against racial bias & hate.
    They did bond.
When Rocky died, his then wife said it was the only time she ever saw him cry.

I never heard that he did this.
But Frazier went to bat for him to the very top to get his license back AND gave him money when Ali could not earn.
So Ali had no reason for bad blood then-& what are the sources for when & how often Frazier called him Clay?

At any rate the offenses are not nearly proportionate.
Ali never complained about Frazier saying anything to my knowledge-but falsely tried to portray Frazier as an Uncle Tom.
And used hateful racist language that also betrayed the positivity & empowerment he otherwise represented for black folks.

Lol what are you saying? Ali was intimidated by the 45 year old and long retired Marciano and was too scared by his threat of making it into a real fight?

I agree that what Ali did is worse. I'm just saying that Joe is not completely innocent in the matter.

And here's an interview from May of 1967 with Joe where he refers to Ali as "Clay".

I reported the facts. My interpretation? Though I favor Ali over him even prime for prime, there was an intimidation factor. Ali had showed off his bruises from their "play" & remarked how hard he hit.
Also there was no way he wanted or could look decent if he beat up a long retired fighter.
WHile he knew that he was wrong & both properly & in his self-0interest backed off.

I would figure most of these things were implicit.

OK, though worse is a massive understatement.
And Frazier did those huge favors for Ali AFTER this time.
When Ali was deploying vicious & racist hate speech for years, I do not recall Frazier ever stooping to this level.

    It remains a massive Betrayal.

You seriously believe that an attrition fighter who struggled mightily with a retired, 34 year boxing instructor (an opponent who hadn't won a legit bout in 6 year,s) is going to beat the most talented heavyweight, the best and quickest stylist, who ever bestrode this earth?

Do you understand how rediculous this is?

Ali let Terrell get under his skin, and viewed many African American types who did not follow the Nation of Islam teachings as Uncle Toms. He also accused Terell of dirty fighting. Terell fought with an injured eye, he says Ali thumbed him early. Mildenberger (in "Facing Ali") and Ken Norton ("Going the Distance") both accused Ali of thumbing them as well. This could be a pattern.

If Ali was serious about not being called Clay, he should have legally changed his name to Ali.

If the only film on Ali was vs. Holmes, how would you rate him? A very interesting question I'd like to see you answer.

In the computer tournament, they aren't using a fighters final fight to judge anything!
