They fought eachother like sparring partners.

Ron pressed what little of the fight there was, and it was clear Muhammad was playing it safe and waiting for spots to punch.

I had the fight 6-4 for Lyle going into the 11th, when Ali decided it was time to fire. He landed a real great right hand, and there was just no coming back for Ron after that. Good stoppage.

We never saw a Prime Lyle, he would've been invincible, & KO'd Ali & Foreman on the same night!

no? it was basically a sparring session. Ali hadn't turned it on until the 11th.

Lets not forget,,,,,,,,, Senor Gregorio Peralta Drew with a prime Ron Lyle.

Peralta also slaps Muhammad Ali around too, only to get a Draw....

What can be learned from this ? Ali was overrated as a boxer , Shavers overrated as a puncher.

These forums will always support claims like : "Byrd , Norris and Toney were nowhere near Ron Lyle in terms of boxing skill , if the Klitschkos fought in Ali's time they would have been bums , if Kenny Norton and Jack Dempsey fought today they would have held the HW title of the world."

THis was a huge disappointment for Lyle ... he was simply in awe of Ali and fought like it .. Ali did nothing that night. It was a terrible performance ... you would think after all the years trying to regain the title he would have defended it with more class .. Lyle fought the whole fight like a deer in headlights ... terrified of punching himself out, super cautious and was still ahead after 10 because Ali did absolutely nothing the whole night ...
he then caught Lyle with a decent right on the button in rd 11 and Lyle froze like he was nailed by Joe Louis ... Ali then threw a ton of punches, most of which either missed or were pure arm punches and Lyle did nothing till the ref stopped it ... it remains a huge puzzle to me how a man that could get of the floor and trade bombs with George Foreman and Earnie Shavers froze up like that against Ali but basically Lyle choked .. Ali was his idol and he simply could not get around it ....

Study the film again. Ali was connecting with virtually every punch he threw, prior to the referee's intervention.

It seemed like they were fighting almost as if there was a gentlemen's agreement in place.

    Another fix,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ron Lyle was told, you can have the fight, but don't come in great shape.

Muhammad will let you win most of the rounds, making you look good.
In Round 11, you start to dance and get cute, and Muhammad will hit you.
You stagger back and let him hit you about 25 times, and the referee will stop the fight.

You scream unfair, and ask for a rematch, because you're ahead on the cards/

Ali was never a big puncher. The punchers he may have been landing were low grade arm punches.

It's well known that Ali was not a big powerpuncher, but his punches were very fast and accurate. Even up to the middle 1970's. Clusters of fast and true punches stunned Lyle, and put him on ***** Street.

The right hand cound not knockdown Frazier in 41 rounds, Norton in 39 rounds, could not seriously hurt Floyd Patterson, Quarry and a dozen other fighters ... Lyle took much harder shots from Foreman and Shavers and simply froze and choked.
