In 1976 American fight promoters offered Stevenson the amount of five million dollars to challenge world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in his first professional bout. Teofilo refused, asking "What is one million dollars compared to the love of eight million Cubans?" Any prediction on this fantazy fight?
Ali was able to edge Norton in 1976. Teo had never fought beyond 3 rounds. Ali by TKO in 10 rds over Stevenson.
If i remember rightly the reason that it didn't happens was Stevenson insisted on it only being a 5 rounder.
Ali would win it on points or Stevenson would retire. Stevenson looked great in his amature fights but it's nothing like pro boxing. I don't believe that Stevenson could handle 15 rounds distanse and Ali is a kind of boxer that nobody could knock out quicky.
"What is five million dollars, compared to the eight million punches I will have to take to earn it"?:good
Obviously you are jesting,Enery Stevenson was a great AMATEUR ! Ali would stop him before the alloted distance limit.
It is what it is, a top amateur v a top pro, in fact more than a top pro, an undisputed heavyweight champ. Murder picture with calls for boxing to be banned in the aftermath
Ali would stop Stevenson in 5 to 6 rounds.Teofilo couldn't handle Igor Vysotsky, and now he wanted to go against Muhammad. Not happening.
Stevenson was a great amateur boxer, not a great fighter. Amateurs rarely peak that young, and its impossible to master the craft at a 12-15 round level fighting 3 rounds. It becomes its own sport. Teofilo is one of the best ever at Amateur boxing, but he doesn't have even the whiff of a shot against a true great prizefighting champion. He never learned how to box pro. Ali by what he wants any time after the 4th round.
