What's actually amazing about this matchup is that many knowledgeable people thought it was plausible! This was due to as you say , Chamberlain was an awesome physical specimen. Won the high jump in college, threw the shot put , ran track, had a vertical jump of over 40 inches, clocked the 40 in 4.5 , ran a 9.6 hundred, and was said to have bench pressed 600 pounds. A great video to watch is ,,the amazing strength of Wilt Chamberlain..
Chamberlain had a nice calm demeanor thankfully or he could have hurt alot of people. He never wanted be viewed as a bully or a monster. One time he did get mad was against Baltimore when Gus Johnson was going in for a dunk and Wilt came from behind and blocked the dunk in his hand and reversed it's course. The result? Johnson shoulder was ripped out. He was a big strong guy himself 6-7 240
I love the stories below and it's why Ali would have a much easier time he didn't clown Wilt and make him mad. One thing you never wanted to do is make Wilt made or test him. He was about as competitive as they come. I would never want Wilt Chamberlain trying to take my head off, no matter in the ring or on the streets. Walter Bellamy was the next big thing and was hyped as such. He average 30 points that first season. The first time they met, Walter shook Wilt had and said nice to meet you. Wilt said "Nice to meet you to Walter but you're not scoring this game. After blocking "all" of Walter's shot in the first half, he came out in the second half and said.. now you can play Walter. He loved the challenge. This content is protected another great story I love, and it goes to show you just how dominating Wilt must've been in his prime. Just unreal dominant. He just didn't want to hurt anybody and he didn't have that eat your heart out mentality. If he had what Russell had tenacity wise... He'd like be the one with 11 rings. Anyways, a few players from the 80's have said when asked, who is the best player you played with or against ever... They said it was a an almost 50 year old Wilt Chamberlain playing at the UCLA pick-up games with other current NBA players. The famous story is how Wilt, and a team of College Freshman... beat a prime Magic, Bernard King, AC Green, James Worthy and Byron Scott. Now, they might not have been going balls to the wall all out, but anybody who knows magic knows he hates losing and always tries to win any game. Here's the story This content is protected Some other videos about Wilt for people to watch if they'd like This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrpmGuCmGnc&t=124s
Growing up in Philly you would hear a lot of stories about Wilt Chamberlain. He was a fascinating guy. Very intelligent and definitely not a follower. Literally the greatest athlete ever.
The best heavyweight boxer in the world, one of the best ever against a complete amateur from a completely different sport , not even an old Mayweither against an MMA guy .. Ali in a round or two if he wanted to end it fast. A real puncher would end it in a round.
Maybe Wilt Chamberlain should have challenged George Foreman Or if Chamberlain was around in the 40s, Joe Louis
Remember Shaq vs De la Hoya? Shaq was the same height as Chamberlain, but even bigger in weight. De la Hoya was smaller than Ali by a significant amount and he still easily handled Shaq. Imagine Shaq vs Joe Louis? Hell imagine Shaq vs Bob Foster?? Chamberlain would have an infetismal small chance at beating Ali
No chance. Michael Jordan tried baseball with limited success, at the end of his 'baseball career'? Double AA, .227 BA, limited defensive skills and arm. He, smartly, packed it in and returned to basketball. Outside of classic boxing baseball is my fav sport and, IMO, Jordan did more to enhance the talent of pro baseball player's unique talents than anyone. Back to thread: "Timber Wilt!!!"
