The 'Thrilla' was Ali's best for guts, sucking it up and coming back as you say but not his best formwise.

But wasn't that more about the adversity he forced himself through rather than his skill at the time?

Again Ali rated it as his best performance.

One of the characteristics historians look for are the characteristics Ali displayed during his third bout with Frazier. Against a world class leading contender in a fight he probably should have lost (most any other hwt would have wilted vs Frazier that night) fighting tooth and nail and coming back from the brink of a loss to win. That win sealed Ali as an ATG on anyone's scorecard.

Suggest you watch Ali in that bout. He was in tremendous condition. He not only boxed at distance beautifully early but in close fought back with both fists later on in the bout.

One of Ali's most remarkable performances. Most don't realize how close Frazier came to winning this bout. He had Ali out on his feet in round 11 and unless you watch closely you would never know it. A very short inside left hook did the job, Ali's arms went nearly to his side as Joe teed off with hooks. Ali grabbed Frazier, the ref wrestled them free, and Ali from nowhere lashed out with punch after punch turning a potential big Frazier round into "pick um". I gave Joe round 11....most give it to Ali due to the flashy combos mid round.

To me round 11 made the fight 6-5 Frazier. Twelve was another close round. Last two clearly were in Ali's pocket. One reason the fight was hard to score is Ali did an incredible job never showing himself to be hurt. He would take Joes best blows and just stand there. Must have been very demoralizing for Frazier. After the bout Joe said the following.

"Lawdy Lawdy he is great. I hit him with punches that would have knocked down the walls of a city and he just stood there".

The Soul Brothers vs the Quarry Brothers". JerryQ had just seen his brother Mike almost killed by Foster (BF: "I thought I had killed the kid"). Pretty hard for JQ to get back up to fight Ali, 20 minutes later.

Just judging Ali on how he looked. I think that was the quickest he had been since his exile. Both hand and foot speed he was in great condition.

He looked pretty good in the Chuvalo rematch I thought. Won easier in this fight.
