Muhammad Ali's challengers 1965-1967 vs Ali's challengers 1975-1978. Which era takes it? It could be Earnie Shavers vs Ernie Terrell, or Karl Mildenberger vs Jean Pierre Coopman.
I certainely think a 1975 joe frazier should be favored over the floyd Patterson who fought with a bad back ,george chuvalo, henry cooper, brian london, karl middenberger, a shot Cleveland williams, ernie terrell, an old zora Folley and maybe the Liston who didn't come to fight if you know what i mean...........
1. Sonny Liston vs Chuck Wepner, 1965 version 2. Floyd Patterson vs Ron Lyle 3. George Chuvalo vs Joe Bugner 4 Henry Cooper vs Joe Frazier 5. Brian London vs Jean Pierre Coopman 6. Karl Mildenberger vs Jimmy Young 7. Cleveland Big Cat Williams vs Richard Dunn 8.Ernie Terrell vs Ken Norton 9.Zora Folley vs Alfredo Evangelista. Which ones win and how?
I say: 1) Liston rips Wepner's face apart and stops him in 7 or 8 like what happened in the real fight. 2)Patterson would easily outbox Lyle, but Ron's size and real power, coupled with Floyd’s questionable chin might give him the victory. Especially when it comes to talk about the one who fought ali with a bad back......But if Floyd stayed on the bike and boxed, he wins…Patterson was lightyears better as a boxer. 3)i believe Bugner pulls out a close decision who knows 4) Frazier easily cut Cooper's to pieces and if that doesn't happen, Joe wears him down for a Late TKO stoppage. 5) 2 limited boxers, but london atleast went the distance and looked slightly more impressive in his prime against the likes of Johansson, cooper or quarry. And he beat an old Folley but it's still better IMO than anything coopman did in his whole career. I take London by KO. 6) i believe Young, if everything and i stress EVERYTHING was right, he make Karl look like a clown and outpoints him. 7) i'm not sure if a shot williams was still good enough to beat someone like Richard dunn .....a prime Cleveland easily win this fight but the 1966 one??? I like the big cat to win by a close decision. 8)Boring fight, Terrell could probably take a decent amount of punishement but i don't think he would dish it out, so Norton is not going out early or late. Kenny use his greater foundamentals and strength and wins a decision. 9) Folley might have been past it during the late 1960's but it should be noted he was on a winning streak, beating the likes of Bonavena and foster, before he finally got his title shot so i think he wins by decision or possibly by KO since Alfredo was punched out by the likes of Holmes and spinks and greg page. 5-4. Here Ali's title 1965-1967 title challengers takes it.
Excellent post! I agree with everything written here but will add that if it's the Patterson with the bad back that faces Lyle, I would have to pick Lyle by KO. An otherwise healthy Patterson I would pick to win a decision.
Liston by stoppage Patterson by decision but has to get off the floor once or twice. Bugner by close decision if he's in one of his "Up for it" moods. Frazier by early ko. London by stoppage. Young by decision. Williams by stoppage (Even an old Cleveland) Norton by decision or late stoppage Foley by stoppage
