The big thing with the fight is just how well prepared Larry Holmes was. I think on that night he was simply going to put on a career best performance. That was his big moment in the sun and he was 100% prepared and ready. It just takes away so much from 1 guy showing up on a career best night and the opponent showing up essentially with nothing that same night. But that bout illustrates the troubles Ali of that 73-76 timeframe would have had with that version of Larry Holmes. To me, it would have been another guy in that Norton vein that presents all sorts of problems and makes for tough fights and tough rounds and close decisions. I think it'd have to be the 67 version of Muhammad that could deal effectively with that 1980 version of Ali. Can you imagine the job that 1980 version of Larry does against Mike Spinks?
It´s so sad. It´s like Elvis. Everybody around him is clapping their hands, praising him with lies. I like Holmes´ attetude towards the fight. He´s a better man than he´s ever got credit for. It was a Herbert Muhammed - the bad guy in any other version of Ali´s tragedy - who came down from his seat on the 6th raw to order the fight to be stopped ! If Black Muslims were rotten - what does this in´formation say about boxing ?
Herbert Muhammad was a money grabbing scumbag. A lot have expressed the opinion that he was the only one who could have talked Ali out of coming back for that fight. Having said that, obviously, Ali himself, should have displayed better judgement.
I'll always be convinced that the Ali of 1972-74,highly trained and focused, could have edged out the 1980 Holmes. The Holmes of 1980 would have stopped Spinks around the halfway mark.
Good documentary and yes watching that it is apparent how far gone Ali really was at that point. There is a Holmes-Cooney Documentary that is supposedly being shopped to HBO and ESPN 30/30 right now not sure if either will buy it though.
