When I moved out of my house my mother threw away a huge trunk filled with ring and KO magazine issues. That was the end of that

My mother died at the start of the pandemic (not from Covid-19) and then my two nephews inherited the house with everything in it. I'm not sure what their going to do with all of it. My boxing magazine collection was incomplete but my brother and I had just about every single Marvel and DC comic published from the mid-70s to the 90s. They were all boxed so I imagine they would be worth a fair amount today, unless they just want to read them all. Heheh.

I wonder what Tony Galento's training routine would be

Well whatever their plan was with weights, it seemed to have paid off since Ali visibly damaged Frazier with his punches in Manilla far more than the other 2 fights and ended up stopping him with major swelling and bruises.

Ali was really letting his hands go in that fight and had bad intentions. Letting it go to the cards was always risky with a high volume operator like Frazier. I think it's definitely possible the weights and axe chopping exercises gave Ali a slight boost in power making his muscles firmer, strengthening his back, and toughening his wrists to brace for the impact.

Yes, boxing Frazier over 15 in the heat in Manilla wouldn't be a good idea for the ageing Ali. He needed to do some real damage while conserving energy as much as possible.

I've looked through his autobiography several times, and can't find anything regarding Ali lifting weights - can you supply a page number or quote? I'd be surprised if he did; Angelo was strictly opposed to his fighters lifting weights, along with doing too much roadwork. Ali was a notoriously lazy trainer; there's video out there of Holmes giving him crap because he hardly trained at all for Foreman and Frazier. Getting him to lift weights in addition to sparring, bag work, skipping rope and the calisthenics he typically did (usually sit ups and bicycles for his stomach) would have been hard.

Ali was also one of the most photographed athletes in modern history, and I can't find a single photo of him with a barbell or dumbbell.

Ultimately, I think Ali became a victim of his own talent, chin, and toughness.

Has anyone read Jack Dempsey's book on training, my late mate was obsessed with it, I've never read it, I imagine it's a great read.

Lyle started that when he spent a long time in solitary confinement in jail.
