    This thread is nuts.

Ali wins whenever he feels like it. No disrespect to Jones but he is not a great heavyweight but Ali was probably the greatest ever.

Complete mismatch. Ali's size, natural edge in strength and comparable speed are just too much for Roy who gets way too much credit at HW for beating a cherry picked opponent in Ruiz. Roy might make it troublesome for Ali for a few rounds until Ali gets pissed off. When he does i'ts all over for Jones.

I can't imagine Jones beating any of the classic top tier heavies. Let alone The Greatest. I can just hear Muhammad in an interview prior to them fighting "when me and Jones fight, there's gonna be TWO great fighters in the ring, but only ONE great heavyweight. I'm gonna be whuppin'Jones on his bones "

No, he`s correct, Ali`s footwork & footspeed was far better than Jones... Muhammad Ali`s footwork was the best on film IMO - which to me is all time, **** newspaper articles.

Ps. Anyone on here that thinks Jones would win even 1 in 20 vs a pre Spinks Ali is either having a wind up or seriously need to check into the nearest rehab.

ESB is going down the fkn toilet... this thread was likely started as a joke, as bait.... & some of you dumbasses are actually AGREEING :-( that Roy fkn Jones has anything but a prayer vs the best HW of all time.

    Use your heads.

    Disappointing.

    Thats all :verysad

I doubt whether Roy Jones, himself, believes that he could have beaten Muhammad Ali. John Ruiz was the highest calibre of heavyweight that he could have defeated. Do n't get me wrong,I consider Jones to be one of the best pound for pound fighters of modern times, but as I've said earlier on this thread,he could not have beaten ANY classic top tier heavyweight, let alone Muhammad Ali.

When you watch Ali against for example Foster and Patterson, it's clear that he was very good in making his size and strength count against smaller opponent, though. True, they were not in any way as elusive as Jones, but Ali still showed skill in walking a smaller opponent down. Ellis is another example.

People say Ali wasn't a devastating puncher, but he showed he had enough for guys that size. Jones didn't have a sturdy chin even for a LHW, so I don't think he could afford to take many clean shots from Ali.

In a fight against an Ali from the early 70's, I think that Jones could have some success early on, but eventuallly Ali would start to time him better with the jab and gradually take over. At that stage he still had a very fast and precise jab, and he would have a great reach advantage against Roy. He wouldn't be concerned much with Roy's punches and would wear him down. Over 15 he executes the coup de grace with his right in the late stages. Over 12 Jones might survive to lose by 8-4 or something like that. Perhaps closer.

The question of the thread is valid, though, since Jones would be hard stylistically for Ali.

I actually think Jones could have a better chance against prime Ali. That Ali was more anxious of getting hit and would probably hesitate more against a counter-punching Jones.

As evidenced by his fights against Patterson (rematch) and Foster, he had absolutely no respect for their power and walked them down when he felt like it.

One of the most popular misconceptions is that these fights were difficult for him. He toyed with Foster, showed no respect at all. The commentator is actually baffled by how easily Ali handles him, and remarks how it is like "a father spanking a child". Due to Ali's nochalance Foster did manage to land 3-4 good punches. One a grazing left hook that managed to open a cut on Alis face.

The rematch with Patterson was pretty similar. Ali payed for his horse playing by being tagged once or twice, but when he got down to business it was quite quickly over.

Sweet Pea is certainly talking out of his ass on this one. Jones gets a man sized beating over 12 rounds by a prime Ali, and if he really wanted to, he could stop Jones down the stretch. It's true, Jones is faster, but Ali's hands were so quick that Jones reflexes would have failed him numerous times in the contest. He'd get tagged more often than he ever has, and considering Ali is far bigger than the joke fighters he was fighting at 175lbs, in addition to being on a different planet in terms of talent, then Jones is way out of his depth here. Ali of '76 also beats Jones.

I guess beating Ruiz goes a long ****ing way.

Maybe Toney and Valuev has a shot at Ali as well. Probably only slightly faster and more elusive than Patterson without the threatening one punch power to give Ali anything to consider. I see Jones getting stopped and coming up with some sort of excuse, "I uh, gained weight to quickly and his gloves were loaded."

Ali toys with him and stops him on a tko...taking care not to hurt him too bad...or he goes all out and just overwhelms Roy in 2 or 3. Worthless thread.

To be honest, I think people here underrates Jones' chances. Even though Pea simplifies it somewhat, he's right that Jone's style would trouble Ali more than it would most other ATG HWs.

Roy beating a guy like Ruiz means he would give Ali problems?
