Wiiliam Muldoon ,champion wrestler and famous trainer of John L ,says he had to collect, and escort a "very much under the weather," Fitz home from a drinking party ,the night before Fitz defended against Jeffries. As a consequence he was not surprised that Fitz lost.

Fitz developed a drink problem ,that is known. I should think getting smashed the night before you are to defend your title against a man 13 years younger, and 39 lbs heavier is taking complacency a step too far however, especially if you have not had a fight in 2 years.
It was Fitz who suggested Jeffries as a challenger, he obviously both, badly underestimated Jeffries abilities ,and overestimated his own condition for ring warfare after 2 years dissipation.

Well it seems so ridiculous that a man would do this on the eve of defending the championship. It makes me wonder if this was some sort of routine thing for him.
    Such functioning alcoholics do exist.

Fitz's age, and the 2-year layoff suggest to me he was far from his best anyway.
But he was a special fighter.

interesting fact: over 56% of fitz's wins involve slapping his own knee before the knockout

Fitzsimmons complacency is much easier to understand, when you look at the events leading up to the fight.

Jeffries had been pilloried for his lacklustre showing against Bob Armstrong, in his previous fight. The press said that he had been exposed as a hype job, didn't belong in the championship class. Of course his poor showing was caused in part by a broken thumb.

Remember that Armstrong was one of Fitzsimmons sparring partners, who he used to beat up on. Old Fitz probably thought "I can take this big stiff easily".

Of course the rest is history.

And yet he still laid a horrendous beating on Jeffries before wilting. Fitz was a monster.
