I find it very irritating when more than one person is giving advice to a figher in between rounds. This happened in the recent Green vs. Ward fight. I also remember Lennox Lewis' trainer, during Lewis vs. Tyson say "only one person can speak at a funkcing time"... the other guys ignored the lead trainer and continued to talk. I also remember when Livingstone Bramble had Oba Carr in trouble, in between rounds Oba Carr's father/assistant trainer told Manny Steward to shut the **** up, it was hillarious and Manny was pissed. I don't think he trained Oba anymore after that fight. Jackson could barely give Green sorely needed instructions because the guys in the corner were babbling non instructional motivational bull**** that did not help Green.
We saw this recently in the UK with Tyson-McDermott in the Tyson corner. Not quite sure who was who, but I do believe that the uncle kept having to tell the father, his brother, to but out in the corner. Also, in Danny's corner for Williams-Klitschko. Very frustrating to hear two guys pissing in a fighter's ear.
Mugabi's corner of Mickey Duff, George Francis and some bull**** priest feeding Mugabi all this **** about "We Believe In You" when he was getting his ass kicked by Hagler in 1986 just drove me nuts.... I hated "Rappaport and Jones" in between rds during Cooney's gallant but losing fight with Larry Holmes..... Victor Valle was fine......... Tyson's corner against Douglas was a clusterd **** of a mess....... UGH! MR.BILL
When a guy who runs corner with authority is there, he won't let it happen. Valle needed money att iem, and needed Cooney, so he let Pappanport and Jones, two know-nothings, yell in corner. Worst I remember was Spinks -Ali rematch, where Georrge Benton actually left corner during fight, due to Leon Spinks entourage yelling such great advice as " Wiggle the worm man, wiggle the worm!!" and 'Boogie Leeon, boogie !" Bunch of Leon's leeches were all around corner, not letting Benton get a word in.
Toss-up........ A great fight in a time machine........ I like SRL by a **** hair...... MR.BILL I ****ed-up....... "Wrong thread."
Sometimes it seems to work. Lou Duva and George Benton worked together ok with Whitaker and Holyfield. Also this [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TVi6qugGBw[/ame]
Multiple voices in the corner is often a sign of ineptitude or panic. Even good corners panic a bit -to wit, Floyd's corner after round 2 against Shane.
Doesn't this all make the Petronellis in Hagler's corner sound like monks having taken a vow of silence? Comebacking Foreman even made the frequently shrill Dundee chill and mellow. Frequently during Duran's latter career (post Arcel and Brown), a cacophony in Spanish could be heard between rounds, but El Cholo knew more about boxing than all of them together, and could just tune it out. (Ali didn't listen to his corner much either.)
Bertos corner against Ortiz was a disgrace. Initially his brother and trainer were talking simultaneously. After the 6th round, Bertos father also began to give instructions. It was three mother****ers giving Berto advice from rounds 7-12.
it was awful. it was not even 'advice' it was just unnecessary and unhelpful noise. "now or never man" or whatever it was, 10 times in a row. All while trainer is trying to do get him to focus.
They should all have ***** slapped him simultaneously. All he was doing the entire fight was loading up and laying in the clinch. :huh
yah. he definitely wasn't making it 'his' fight. Ortiz had it all in his court for the majority of it. sure, he got rocked too, but at least he was connecting with most of his shots. whereas Berto was just swinging away hoping to KD him once more.
Indeed. It made no sense. There were so many opportunities for Berto to be more calculated with his right hand. Ortiz has the tendency to lean in and square up when he misses with a straight left, and this opens him up for a right hand counter. Berto would often do the hard bit and make him miss, but not come back with anything of his own. Inexplicable really. Wasn't impressed at all by his conditioning either.
****ing this :good I desperately wanted to punch Berto's brother in the throat every time a round ended.
