Anthony Mundine to move to US

CONTROVERSIAL boxer Anthony Mundine is poised to take his career overseas.

The former rugby league star plans to move to the US in January where the confessed "nobody" will take up residence until his dreams are conquered.

"I am a nobody as far as America goes," Mundine said.

"I am 35 years old and it's now or never. That's why I'm going to America.
"I haven't informed anybody. I'll sit down with my father (and trainer, Tony) after my next fight (Garth Wood on December 8) and work things out."

Hollywood megastar and close ally Russell Crowe is in Mundine's corner.
Crowe has suggested a move to Miami, where Mundine would receive tutelage under legendary trainer Angelo Dundee.

But Mundine's preference is to be closer to America's gateway to Australia, Los Angeles.

"Russell has been a great help. He is keen for me to train with Angelo, but he is five hours from LA, which is on the other side of the country." Mundine said.

"I would like to talk to Freddy Roach, who is based in Hollywood, and do a deal with him."

Roach boasts an impressive stable of fighters, having trained Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya and current world champion Manny Pacquiao.

Mundine likened his move to the US to good friend and Sydney nightclub king John Ibrahim.

"If you wanna be there, you gotta be among the action," he said. "You can't be the king of the Cross (Kings Cross), if you're not part of the action."

The trash-talking boxer has finally made good his promise to fight the best in the world.

"I can't expect to fight the likes of Pacquiao or (Floyd) Mayweather or somebody of their calibre," Mundine said. "I have to work my way up the ladder. I'm willing to fight (Antonio) Margarito (who went down to Pacquiao last week in Dallas), Miguel Cotto or anyone else for that matter.
"I started boxing when I was 25 and I'm still relatively young. I've had 42 fights and I'm still yet to be beaten up or bruised.

Standing in his way is little known New South Welshman Garth Wood. The pair will face-off December 8 at Sydney's Acer Arena, Homebush.

Anthony Mundine still hoping for US success

ANTHONY Mundine is adamant a boxing career awaits him in the US.

The much-maligned Mundine was forced to reassess his travel plans after his shock loss in December to inexperienced brawler Garth Wood, which cast doubt over whether he would, or even should, continue to fight.

"I am still going to the States to fight," Mundine told friends last week.

Travel plans are already being drawn up for the fighter to spend a month in Los Angeles.

Mundine, who turns 36 next month, sounded out legendary trainer Freddy Roach late last year to help take him to stardom in the US.

But Roach has warned the controversial kid from Redfern that this would be no holiday in Hollywood.

"I don't have time for lazy fighters," Roach said from his Wild Card gym in Los Angeles.

"If you don't want to train and get in shape and follow the rules and do it correctly, stay home."

Roach packs a mean punch and has little time for wannabes, but he knows Mundine is no ordinary tourist looking to make a dollar.

"I know he has talent and he is a very athletic person, but he is a little bit green in some areas of boxing," Roach said.

"It seems like he just needs a little direction. But he definitely has potential.

"If he can make it through my gym workouts and the sparring I'll line up for him, then he will make it on the world stage.

"If he is willing to listen, I'm sure I could fit him in. He is a great athlete, but not a complete fighter, I don't think yet."

Mundine stunned the sporting world when he went down to little-known Sydneysider Wood.

It shelved plans for an immediate trip across the Pacific, where Mundine was planning to head after what was thought to be an easy bout.
Instead, he now faces a crucial rematch with Wood in Brisbane on Wednesday night.

"It seemed like he had all the talent in his last fight, and the other guy had all the balls, and I guess the balls took over," Roach said.
"He needs to use his ability. He needs to train and really get in shape. And he needs to work on certain areas, but that's what I live for. I like to improve fighters.

"If I can make someone a better fighter, that's what I do."
Roach said Mundine should quit trying to win titles at a lower weight, and stick to middleweight or supermiddleweight divisions.

"I like him as a middleweight. He seems comfortable and strong," he said. "But if he has to skip meals to make the weight and deprive his body, well then I think he is foolish."

Roach scoffed at suggestions Mundine was too old to carve a new career in the US.

    Mundine 'blacklisted' in USA
    This content is protected

Boxing motormouth Anthony Mundine has accused American fight promoters of 'blacklisting' him due to his inflammatory comments in the days following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

After claiming the WBA interim world light middleweight title in a unanimous points decision over Rigoberto Alvarez in Newcastle on Wednesday night, Mundine launched a tirade on US fight bosses for allegedly ignoring him over the past 10 years.

The Man, a devout Muslim, has been criticised for not fighting in the States but he believes his is paying the price for suggesting America brought 9/11 'upon themselves' and that the attacks were 'God's law'.

Mundine's comments were aired in a controversial interview in October 2001.

'I'm charismatic, I'm flashy, I'm pretty, I'm a former three-time world champion ... you tell me why they don't want me,' Mundine said after comfortably seeing off Alvarez.

'There's only one reason why and you all know what it is.'

'Get on to the American people. They're blacklisting me. I'm telling you they're blacklisting me because of the September 11 (comment).'

'I can feel it in my heart. They don't want me to go over there and kick their butts and make money.'

'I don't want their money, I just want to fight the best. Just line them up. I am ready to take on all comers in the super welterweight division. I believe I am the best.'

The 36-year-old is one loss away from the possible end of his career but that never looked likely against the brave but outclassed Alvarez.
Two judges scored the fight 117-111 Mundine's way while the third gave it to The Man 114-113.

The win sets up a potential meeting with impressive American Austin Trout in Australia next year.

Trout, the current WBA light middleweight champion, boasts a 23-0 record and is 10 years Mundine's junior
Mundine said of the Trout challenge: 'Bring on that sucker. He was talking crap about me, saying this, saying that ... so bring it on Austin.'

Sept 11 comment holding me back: Mundine

Anthony Mundine claims his decade-old comment that the United States brought the September 11 terrorist attacks "upon themselves" is still preventing him from getting a big name fight in America.

Mundine took the WBA interim world light middleweight title in a unanimous points decision over Rigoberto Alvarez in Newcastle on Wednesday night, paving the way for a potential fight with undefeated American Austin Trout in Australia.

Often accused of dodging the big names, Mundine said the reason why he had not had a major US fight was because of his 2001 comment which was widely reported and condemned.

"Get on to the American people. They're blacklisting me. I'm telling you they're blacklisting me because of the September 11 (comment)," Mundine said.

"I know it. I can feel it in my heart. They don't want me to go over there and kick their butts and make money.

"I don't want their money, I just want to fight the best. Just line them up. I am ready to take on all comers in the super welterweight division. I believe I am the best.

Austin Trout's manager confirms the fighter is more than happy to fight Anthony Mundine in the USA

Talk is cheap ... Trout's management claim the American wants a shot at Mundine (Pictured). Source: News Limited

Like so many things with poor old Anthony Mundine, the American black ban exists only in his head.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal management for Austin Trout, the WBA junior middleweight champion, are not only willing to fight Mundine in the States, but have offered up a New Year's Eve Showtime blockbuster.

The lucrative December 31 pay-per-view - which took only one phone call to confirm - completely embarrasses the Redfern fighter's claim that he cannot get a fight across the pond because . . . c'mon sing it Choc . . . "they're blacklisting me because of the September 11 (comment) . . . I feel it in my heart".

Sure, many Americans remain unhappy with Mundine for suggesting their country brought "upon themselves" those horrific 9-11 terrorist attacks. But as for some international blanket ban? Comparing himself to the Immortals carried more clout.

"Tell Anthony Mundine the ban's been lifted," Trout's manager Bob Spagnola said.

"Not only that, we're willing to offer him a New Year's Eve party. We're talking a title fight in America. On Showtime.

"The network has already offered us the date if we can find an opponent.

"All Anthony has to do is say 'yes'."

Of course, for the New Year's Eve bout to go ahead, Trout must first beat Melbourne wharfie Frank LoPorto in Texas on November 11. If that happens, his team is confident the 26-year-old southpaw can continue his undefeated run by taking down two Aussies in as many months.

"Frank is a good, tough fighter," Spagnola continued.

"But Mundine, apparently he's a legend. I know he's giving you guys a lot of conspiracy theories, a lot of excuses.

"And that's fine. But we have a saying over here, 'fun is fun but when the sh*ts goes up the bull's a#se, that is bullsh*t'.'

"Anthony says he wants title fights in America. Well, it's time the rubber met the road," he said.

Spagnola also laughed off Team Mundine claims that his camp had baulked at coming Down Under.

"In four of his past six fights, Austin has travelled to Canada, Panama and Mexico twice. We offered a 50-50 split with options. They didn't want that."
