it was the laft on the chin that turned the lights out imo. what was mundine thinking turning his head like that? if he doesn't turn his head, then it don't hit the side of his noggin. was that paul briggs on the edge of the ring going nuts? very good whoever it was, he knew anthony wasn't going to get up and was a little excited, lol.
The body shot from Wood was the catalyst here....look at The Pioneer take the right to the midsection then go into protection mode....great body shot....the rest is like a deck of cards once the combo starts culminating with the left lights out hook onto the glass jaw.
You know, ever since someone pointed out the headbutt/clash the other day, whenever I watch that footage I can't miss it now! I dunno if it had any effect as far as stunning him, but Mundine turns side on and starts ducking straight after it, so I guess it could be argued that it did in fact start the series of events that resulted in him being KOd. The overhand right that hits him behind the ear doesn't look too innocuous, but it could also be argued that it caused concussion, but the left hook/rip is definitely the moneyshot - you just see his lights go out and he starts to drop like a stone from that one. No way did he take a dive - he was out cold - he's too proud to deliberately look as stupid, graceless and slackfaced as that.
You're right - the right to the body does look more effective when you see it from the angle from behind Mundine...it also opened him up for the headbutt
The headbutt was glancing, this coupled with The Pioneers ability to make it dramatic for the ref to see cost him his composure....then hello to the devasting series of punches which followed.
I just watched the whole fight for the first time courtesy of the clips TC posted in another thread - Mundine looked woeful, hanging on for dear life whenever Wood engaged with him, punching in the back of the head yet complaining to the ref when Wood did the same to him - a very messy fight indeed. Mundine barely used his jab, and Barry Michael mentions at the end of round 1 that he reckons Mundine's still limping from his hip and groin surgery a year ago. I'd hate to take away from Wood's win, but Mundine showed none of his usual footwork and energy in this fight - I wonder how much roadwork he actually did in training for this fight? The mask slipped off after the fight though - Mundine had regressed to his stuttering inarticulate worst when they spoke to him.
anthony thought it would be an easy night, just turn up and win. everybody was saying the same thing really. shows the old saying that it only takes one punch to hit clean and lights out.
Very little movement from Mundine for the whole fight - he pretty much stood there while Wood rushed him and then continually tied him up, no evasive movement whatsoever. He looked lethargic and flat. I reckon he was gassed going into the 4th round. Whether that was because he didn't take the fight seriously as buster suggested, or because he hasn't fully recovered from his surgery and can't train properly I don't know. Also his body language after the fight was almost like he'd gone into the fight expecting to be KOd? I know he was subdued from the KO itself, but it was weird seeing him so flat and resigned to the loss.
Wow, I'd never noticed the headbutt either. It's definitely the catalyst for what follows. It looks like a pretty sharp knock and it reeled Mundine. Ducked away, took his eyes of Wood and let the rain in. There's a headbutt, a punch to the back of the head, possibility of a kneeing... I see enough evidence for Ashley to root for a ruling of no contest!! :deal
