The 'rematch of the mismatch' might actually sell well. As second loss to Wood, as unlikely as it might be, would certainly mean retirement for Mundine.

    Wood offers Mundine rematch

by Craig Watt - Fight News dot com - 21st Dec 2010

Australian Contender winner Garth Wood (10-1-1, 6 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest boxing upsets in 2010 when he knocked out former three time world champion Anthony “The Man” Mundine (40-4, 24 KOs) with a left hook at the Acer Arena on December 8th. The fight was his prize for winning the Australian Contender show on Fox in January. He confirmed to Fightnews today that he has offered Mundine a rematch for April 2011 with a 50-50 income split.

He stated, “Its all gone a bit quiet from the Mundine camp after we made the offer to give him the chance of a rematch. Initially they wanted a 60-40 split but I refused as it was me who knocked him out, not the other way round. I don’t see why I should earn 40% when I was the victor. A split of 50-50 seems a fair offer to me.”

“I am not sure whether he fancies the return or he would be quick to make the match and get his revenge. I am even happy to make the fight for Sydney in his home back yard. Perhaps he is going to retire I am not sure but I can’t wait around forever.”

One other suggested opponent has been Mundine’s arch rival Danny Green who is now IBO Cruiserweight champion.

Wood added, “I suppose all offers are possible but it would be a question of fighting at what weight. I know Danny is nearer light heavyweight that cruiserweight and I am a middleweight, although I won the Australian Contender at the 168 pound super-middleweight limit. For the right deal anything is possible but my first offer is a rematch chance for Mundine. I will enjoy my Xmas break now with my family and revisit the situation in the New Year.”

Yeah, Green would be a crazy mismatch for Wood. Mundine on the other hand.....particularly after the confidence Wood gained from the first bout.

One of the stumbling blocks for a 'rematch of the mismatch' will be Khoder trying to screw team Wood over again - like he did in the first bout.

Hopefully Wood's team will stand firm in the negotiations as it appears important to Mundine's ego that he at least tries to avenge what was certainly the biggest upset this year - probably this decade.

Personally, I think Mundine has no choice but to agree to a re-match if he wants to grab a few final fights before announcing his impending retirement.

It would be a sad way for him to go out mind you if he did lose a second time to Wood.

My own feeling is that he should have already got out of the game by now. He's definitely past his prime.

A rematch with Wood will generate close to what Geale II might have.. IMO.

The re match wont prove anything..Both of these blokes are irrelevent in the world of boxing..

The first fight was a disgrace that was only salvaged by Wood Knocking the mouth Mundine out and giving people like myself the pleasure of witnessing it.And winning a motza on it.yeeeeessssss

Danny Green is no hero but he would flatten a can like Wood, definitely not an idea Garths team would want to entertain.

Are you thinking Green v Wood instead of Wood v Mundine II Bobby, or afterwards?

It could also be used as a lever by team Wood in extracting a decent deal from the morally bankrupt Khoder regarding the terms for Wood v Mundine II.

I'm thinking after mate. Wood's camp would be confident of beating Mundine you'd think. If the rematch falls through I'd be tipping an aproach to Greens camp.

    Sounds logical.

It'll be a very different approach from Mundine in any rematch. On his bike from the first bell - counter and run - a guy desperately fighting for his career - knowing that one mistake will probably end it.

I know because u guys hate choc you can't see that Garth landed a nice headbut to chocs chin followed by a right behind the head....anyway choc will fight for a version of the 154 title in 2011....maybe even the full title depending what Cotto does.

Choc is a guy that sets out to achieve his plans....the Wood ko was a hinderance for sure but it won't stop him getting what he wants :deal

IMO I don't see a rematch with Garth however I do see Garth going on and wooing some other Aussie names

Just having a chat with Bobby mate. But hardly surprised you've arrived having swallowed the hook, the sinker and nearly bitten the end off the rod as well!

2006: Mundine v Green - people can argue weight drained etc, etc - but all that matters is Mundine UD12.

2010: Wood v Mundine - people can argue head-butt etc, etc - but all that matters is Wood KO5.

Straight after Wood won you asked me why he'd fight Wood again - and I replied with a one word answer 'PRIDE' - same answer still stands IMO. Unless of course Khoder screws Wood's crew so hard they tell him to fark off of course.

...and if they do meet again, and Wood beats him a second time, it's curtains mate, just wait and see.
