Buster Douglas Mike Tyson is the most overrated boxer in the history of the sport. I'm not even saying Gassiev would beat him, but he certainly wouldn't be intimidated by him. And btw Gassiev didn't take the Hrgovic eliminator because he was injured! This content is protected
Heavyweights today aren't comparable size-wise to those of Tyson's era and he's already fought a guy many would pick to beat Tyson
The eliminator with Filip Hrgovic (Zhang accepted) took place on Aug. 20, 2022. Gassiev fought Carlouse Welch six days later on Aug. 26. That would be your classic duck. When Gassiev grows a pair and is willing to fight a ranked heavyweight, let us know. It's been five years since he was a cruiser. If he can't even do that, given the heavyweights today, he sure as hell would never have fought a prime Mike Tyson.
All the losers he picks (Wilder, Joshua) all have something in common that seems to contrast with the winners he picks against (Fury, Usyk) but I just can't put my finger on it.
Seems to be the hipster's favourite 'I know my boxing' stance to say Tyson was massively overrated. In fact, I read this so often he's becoming underrated. Yes, even prime Mike had flaws to be exploited. But not by Murat Gassiev whose current HW pro resume reads: Nuri Seferi (currently ranked 182nd by Boxrec), Michael Wallisch (currently ranked 204th, and the 15th best German HW), 42-year-old Carlouse Welch (currently ranked 218th, making him the 53rd best US HW) and Mike Balogun (currently ranked a dizzying 41st and thus breaking the trend of taking on opponents further down the rankings than the previous one). C'mon...
Tyson wins this one, but yes Tyson has become underrated by virtue of being so trashed by new school boxing hipsters. The man did it to himself though. Mike has no one to blame, but himself. When your best win is Spinks you leave a lot to be desired legacy wise.
Tyson by KO within 5 rounds. Tyson is underrated if anything. People point out to him losing to Douglas, which was right when his life started to unravel. But look at his fights when he had Rooney in his corner and was training properly. He was an absolute beast who could punch with either hand, fundamentally sound with insane footspeed and handspeed. And he won the title when he was 20 years old. Let that sink in, which HW today would you favor to do that? And he beat Holmes when he was 21 I believe. Again what HW would you favor to do that at 21 years old (besides maybe Ali)? Also, Douglas wasn't a bad HW, he was underrated in his own right. But to use that again Tyson when he beat guys better than Douglas (Tucker being one, who stopped Douglas) and ignore everything else he accomplished is stupid.
Tyson is the only HW champ to peak at 21. We never saw him at his best. Again, his fault and has himself to blame.
Tyson was better than Gassiev in every department, no fighter with a 76 inch reach could beat Tyson, Holy had a 77.5 inch reach and was far better than Gassiev, no way could a cruiser version of Usyk survive v a prime Mike, a good percentage of Tyson`s opponents might have beat Gassiev as he is eassy to hit and has a shorter reach than Tommy Hearns.
