I was at the Garden the night he was stopped by Marvin in 3 and like I said i have seen Hamsho fight many times he was tough and had a solid chin and proved it in a fight with Hagler previous when he was stopped on cuts but he really did not fight any real punchers. Marvin smoked him that night in 3 and I would not put Hamsho in the class of the better chins because his opposition was not thick with punchers and he was not tested against any real bangers
Fact is before the Hagler rematch he ws never floored after fighting many tough guys .. also important to know the man was a catcher and got hit often. Scypion was a huge bomber and Hamsho walked through him. He walked through Minter, Curtis Parker and Bobby Czyz who later was flattening light heavyeights. He then took an unbelievable amount of shots from Hagler in their first fight, more than I have ever seen anyone else take and kept coming back for more. That to me was a terrific chin.
i remember reading a mag around 83' or so and there was a couple of pages on best defence, left hook, chin etc etc.hamsho was named best chin, just ahead of tex cobb.he was ahead of cobb because he'd faced better opposition.he a had a A+ chin, unfortunately for him so did hagler, who also boxed and hit better.
Someone was actually selling T-shirts of it in the lobby I have to tell you it was torture waiting for the main event. All those prelims and amateurs making their debut and then that awful McCallum Mannion fight, 15 rounds
He also beat the crap out of Boogaloo Watts and stopped him before Hagler could get his revenge. And in the first Hagler fight, Marvin must have won 5 rds by 2 points if they had been less conservative w/ scoring and he couldn't even back Hamsho up. :thumbsup
He had a chin and greatly relied on it but I agree he wasn't truly facing all-time great punchers, was he? A bit overrated on hindsight. I know the likes of Scypion, Parker could punch but it's not like walking through the firepower of a Thomas Hearns, Bob Satterfield, Hurricane Carter.
I believe it's called washed up. If you hold fighters to late after contending losses, then Pazienza was a LOT better than Duran in history.:good
And how are you commenting on this when you admit you haven't even seen all the first Hag. fight? WTF, I can drive a car, but don't comment on the best engines because of it.:good
Look you can only fight who is in front of yu but against big punchers prior to Hagler 2 he took them all without flinching ... there are very , very few George Chuvalo's out there . I am not saying Hamsho's chin is all time number one but it was an A plus chin.
Hamsho had a tremendous chin in the early 1980s. He was very limited in boxing skill, but was exceptionally well conditioned. Al Certo stated that he trained Hamsho the old school way. I remember an old Ring magazine story about Hamsho, Certo and Flood training in Miami in the sweltering heat and doing roadwork on the beach to get in shape. His chin, along with his conditioning made a very tough customer. He beat the best middeweights of his era, except Hagler. Minter, Cycz, Parker, Scypion, Benitez. I saw him KO Bobby Watts, live.
Didn't comment on the first Hagler fight, dip****. Also started this thread asking a question, not making statements. :-(
