There are many examples of one fighter pushing for a fight and the other running the opposite direction. Are there any situations where neither fighter wanted the fight that made sense to happen. Where the risk was greater than the reward for both fighters..or that both were simply cautious.. I think recently Pacquiao vs Mayweather is an example of this. Maybe this could be the answer for a few more big fights never coming off in the past. Is there evidence for any examples?
Saad Muhammad & Eddie Mustafa Muhammad supposedly didn't really want to fight each a second time....though fight was scheduled for the Harold Smith scandal of title fights. MUHAMMAD ALI PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, INC. SCANDAL (EMBEZZLEMENT OF $21.3 MILLION DOLLARS) *This organization had no connection to boxing champion Muhammad Ali other than use of his name for a fee. When allegations of the scandal emerged, Ali asked that his name be dropped. Black boxing promoter Harold J. Smith was chairman of Muhammad Ali Professional Sports, Inc. (MAPS). Smith lived lived like a king and was extremely materialistic and shallow. Smith was also master showman and an expert in deflecting blame. He also had the gift of gab. Smith was known to strut around town, giving the impression that he was a close friend to Muhammad Ali. His lavish spending became suspect-early on. He was known to rent lavish suites and eat expensive food. He also had a appetite for blondes and he was seen all over town in exotic cars. In 1981, Smith was named by Wells Fargo Bank in a $21.3 million civil embezzlement suit. He claimed that bank officials wanted to kill him and his family. Smith also said that he had taken his family to safety in Switzerland and he claimed that bank officials had kidnapped his son for a week, 'making me promise to leave the country, which I did.' The boy was returned shortly afterwards. Smith would eventually leave Switzerland and settle in Puerto Rico. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZXLO78xuLw[/ame]
The word ducking just does not sit well with me....I really doubt very many championship level boxers DUCKED someone because they were afraid or even afraid that they would lose. I do think they are management teams that might avoid or not seek out certain fights, but duck just does not seem to fit it for me. I would not call these ducks, but guys who could have fought but due to relationship did not seek each other out: Wlad vs Vitali Frazier vs Norton Meldrick vs Pea
Roy Jones and Michalczewski if 1 wants 2c a ducking of any type , all 1 has 2do is look at RJJ's record , then at who was available during his era , connect between d2 and there 1 goes . RJJ was a Glass Jawed Fraud .
Many cases of "ducking" are most probably 'mutual ducking'. It just depends on who wins out in the public relations arena, which camp puts the better spin on it. The one who loses that battle gets labelled the 'ducker'.
Case in point. 2 + years ago I suspect you would have seen Mayweather as the clear ducker. The dynamics of the public relations and spin campaigns have changed the way it is seen now.
Jones & Hopkins in 2002 comes to mind, tho I blame Hopkins more for that one actually, he never wanted no part of Jones at that time. That however is nothing compared to the sheer disgrace that is the floyd-pac fiasco... words cannot describe just how wrong that was/is :verysad
Roberto Duran and Antonio Cervantes Carlos Palomino and Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas Danny 'Little Red' Lopez and Bobby Chacon II Ray Leonard and Wilfred Benitez II Victor Galindez and John Conteh
Tbh, i always got the picture from both fighters in post-fight interviews that neither really wanted it. I was crazy on Pac and hated Mayweather so publicly i wouldnt be caught admitting to that. But after Marquez was robbed in their 3rd fight i lost alot of respect for Pacman, so have no problem admitting it now, out of respect for Marquez.
That was not Floyd's doing, it was Cus D'Amatos. Floyd's tougher competition later in his career is proof of this.
