I am not big on labeling a fighter as great in a head to head sense, as its all hypothetical. But if forced to create a list, it would look something like below. Again this does not factor in heavyweights who might belong on such a list for legacy reasons. This is purely head to head.

    In no particular order

    - Joe Louis

    - Muhammad Ali

    - George Foreman

    - Sonny Liston

    - Joe Frazier

    - Larry Holmes

    - Mike Tyson

    - Lennox Lewis

    - Evander Holyfield

    - Wladimir Klitschko

A fair number of those guys are in my legacy top 10 as well, but one or two of them would have to be swapped out in exchange for others.

Head to had I would probably replace Wlad with Vitali, due to his better chin and fighting spirit. It's a great list though

Vitali a better fighting spirit than Wlad? HAHAHAHHAH that's laughable

You think so? Maybe arguable, not laughable tho. Your referring to Wlad always getting up from knockdowns and Vitali quitting to injuries? Let me explain what I meant better.

Vitali seems to enjoy what he does more than Wlad and panics less. Wlad at times seemed very uncomfortable in the ring. I think Vitali has more of a tendancy to fight back when hurt, out of competition. Wlad goes more defensive.

Surely in a hypothetical head to head match you can't worry about vitali quitting a fight he was winning due to a bad shoulder. Those type of things happen in real life, but not mythical fights. Wlad getting put into panic mode or getting knocked down multiple times should be accounted for, since it happened in real life (albeit pre prime).

When has Wlad in his prime 2007-Present ever showed these kinds of signs of panic?

Solid list, Magoo. I may have replaced Wlad with his brother, but Wlad is good at what he does. Good list.

Fighters generally revert to type when put in pressure situations. Wlad hasn't had anyone put meaningful pressure on him in a long time.

This is a fine list, but you definitely need to switch Wlad with his brother. Vitali is much more formidable head-to-head and would win in an actual fight between the two prime-for-prime.

Heck, I think Vitali would win even now.

Thanks for the feedback guys. As for the majority's vote for Vitali replacing Wlad on the list, an argument can certainly be made and very understandably. I suppose the reason I placed him there is because while Vitali DID beat two of Wlad's conquerors, he did manage to fight and beat a wider array of ranked men and with varying styles.. But its still a fair call for those who think otherwise.
