I had my 2nd fight over the weekend. It was a novice tourney and i lost badly to the eventual gold medalist. He was a tough guy, just kept coming and eventually got a points win stoppage in the 2nd round. Anyways, here's the fight.

you definitely should devote more time to inside fighting. This guy wouldnt' of been a problem if you did :)

The smaller boxer with the shorter reach usually fairs better with the shorter punches using inside pressure and getting in close. This way you can take that height reach advantage away from your opponent and even the playing field a bit. Have a look at this clip of some inside fighting:

Don't get picked off by the taller longer reach opponent.

    Kind Regards Bill

personally it wasnt his hieght it was his workrate that i think go to you.if you let your hands go (it is an aquired taste to say the least) he wouldnt of been able to get to you.

he couldnt box just kept putting one hand infront of the other...it's a learning curve man. s'all gud. you looked alright he just was more active.

being on the outside or inside doesnt really matter as long as you have the skills to make them count. he was a tall lad and was clearly walking to you. the right response would be a 1-2 and move.

    as i said, s'allllllll gud

Don't be disappointed, you did well. The reason he was able to score more was because, like VW said, he out worked you. There were a lot of times when you probably should have been jabbing to get in and moving forward when you were just standing there waiting on him to make the first move.
You had some good movement to get inside and landed some good body punches when you were there. Next time you fight someone tall like that, do more of that movement, throw to the body and finish your combinations on the head. Then get right back to it, don't let him rest.

Well done and good luck on your next match.

Negative. With a more consistent body game he'd have been one of the best, as it was, his workrate was too low inside at times. He got inside in order to unleash his combos from mid to close range, not to put in work in close quarters. His body attack was powerful, but not consistent enough inside. Duran was a more educated inside fighter at least, more effective as well.

I think I was at the same tournament and even watched the fight. Provincials in St. Catharines? I fought the opening fight on medals day, Sunday. Was your dad there and taping this? If so I think I spoke to him just before you fought. Small world if so.

Nice fight and good luck with future fights.

Thnx for the feedback and advice guys. I'm still really disappointed about the outcome. Everytime i watch this fight, i just keep thinking, damn.... i can't believe this happened. I remember seeing 1st round,2nd round stoppages happen all the time to other fighters, and always thought to myself, man... if that ever happened to me... I'd just quit boxing LOL,now look where i am. Well it's all good. I definately won't quit but i do feel more humbled now. So, hopefully i'll be able to accomplish more in future.

Yea, he overwhelmed me with punches... I didn't let me hands go and it started looking too one-sided.

Honestly, i was kinda of tentative since in the first 3 seconds of the fight, he landed a really good right uppercut that landed square on my nose. What made it worse is that i leaned into it. After that my nose started gushing and i was really concerned about it. But he was surprisingly strong, his punches all have his bodyweight behind it, so its hard to get him off you. You think he's gonna get tired, but he won't.

Thnx for the video, i'll check it out.

Yea, I was waiting a lot. I was trying to throw bombs too much in this fight, i probably would've been better off moving and throwing fast combinations.

HAHAHA, he looks skinny but the guys a beast. I thought i would be able to just overpower him with bombs, but that didnt go too well.

Yea...maybe wasn`t your dad, sorry, but I watched the fight I think was on Saturday and spoke to someone who knew you I believe. I didn`t see the 2nd medal fight with Fuderer as was winding down from my fight. I won a 2nd round Tko Sunday, first fight of the day. My team mate fought the 4rd fight Sunday against Victor Ong from the Beaver club in Ottawa and won a decision. We are from Sault Ste Marie, Ultimate Fighter. We are also heading down to Oshawa for the Open Championships Nov. 1, so good luck dude and see you at future tours or club shows.

There are a few things you can work on:

Get your coach or a partner to put on the coaches guard and practice getting under the taller opponents jab and working the body.

Remember the body shots will lower your opponents guard for the head shots.

Also when somebody comes onto you like he did in the second round you have to either smother his hands or keep your head moving. Practice both in sparring.

    Start doing some slip drills.

    Learn to bob and weave.

When you move in use a side rythm.

best of luck you did yourself proud :good
