Yep I sparred for the 3rd time tonight and was completely rubbish! I froze and everything I had been learning for months went completely out of the window, charging in with my hands down getting hit at will, the blokes I sparred even went easy on me so much that it got to the point where they were just hitting me at will and letting themselves get hit just for fun, my trainer pulled me out because of it 'that's enough for tonight' while the others went on to sparr another 5 rounds.

I feel useless and a bit of an idiot now, any tips you can give me?

Keep sparring and don't worry about how well you did. No one is born with composure in the ring (despite what they might try and tell you). Keep your head up (metaphorically speaking) and chin down (realistically speaking) and get back to it. Hard work and dedication.

ok first of all I would say just try to relax.
take it easy and pardon the pun, but don't beat yourself up over it.
It takes time to get used to sparring. Keep sparring the more experienced guys though it will fast track you to a new leve.

I think the next thing is promise yourself that next time you get in to spar that you will do your best to keep calm. If you keep calm your defense will improve ten fold.
Try to stay focused on what you want to achieve.
for example, if you want to try to land a jab to start off (I dont know what level your at or how much you know) or 2 and get out of dodge as quickly as possible.
Pracitice one or 2 things like getting out of the way while maintainin your stance.

Dont worry about the punches your throwing just stick to 1 or 2 moves and as long as you stay calm you will be fine.
Its small steps but you will get there.
and its mostly all in the mind like anything.
    Good luck

I know it sounds obvious but focus on using your jab, if you concentrate on keeping your hands up and just throwing clean jabs it will stop you losing your head an running in and getting caught. You were probably trinna think of all the things you had learnt which is difficult so if you focus on that one main thing it should help a lot.

Anyone that has boxed knows this feeling, trust me. I remember reading an interview with David Price and he described something similar to your story. He went back just to prove that he could fight (all he wanted was one fight) and look where he is now.

Nobody get's it right the first time.

Try not to dwell on it too much and just get back in there asap to right any wrongs and get a bad session off your mind. No-one is untouchable or brilliant 24/7, 365 days a year no matter what they say

Don't watch the Rocky films before sparring- they are essentially the pornography of boxing.

That's pretty much how you learn - you get clobbered the first few times, then you stop feeling intimidated and start to relish the combat.

Cheers fellas! Glad to here it is the norm and thanks for the tips

  13. I felt stupid and like it wasn't natural to me like it was others, that's not true listen to your coaches if they show interest and faith in you then there is a reason.

I also tried working on the basics again once in the ring, where is your left hand where is your right.straight back to guard after punching.don't worry about power, much more important is range with your opponent.when I started I wasn't walking through my shots.

Also I'm impressed you have come on here and said what you said that shows that you are not "talking a good game"

Boxings hard as there is many fundamentals to get right when you start
But just think about jab, range and guard then 1 2s

Good luck,i am a novice myself and confidence can be an issue for me

I used to hate sparring my mates at first,i couldnt get my head round it.i just couldnt let my hands go and I would end up just getting hit.i'd crouch too low and mustv been a nightmare to spar.after a while I relaxed and eventually enjoyed it,and looked forward to it.altho I always prefered to spar lads I wasnt close friends with.dont try to punch too hard, relax and enjoy it!
