Hey guys, I've decided to weigh in on my analysis of this upcoming fight. Like most everyone I feel that this will be a very interesting fight. The contrast of styles and the fact that they are both undefeated and are always in good shape come fight night will make it intriguing. Hatton is very good at his style. He has great stamina, a decent chin, is fairly quick, and fights with great intensity. He has the only style that could pose problems for Mayweather. When you are facing a boxer like Mayweather, it's futile to even try to outbox him. I've personally been following the sport for 20 years and am also a boxing historian and an amateur boxer. I've never seen a better fighter than Mayweather. His defense is amazing and so is his technical skill, athleticism, footwork, timing, stamina, ring intellect, and work ethic. His power is also underrated. He hits hard enough to hurt Hatton...believe me. He has a great amateur background and has fought some very good opposition as a pro. Hatton is going to have to be on Mayweather like white on rice and be willing to eat some serious leather in the process. He's got the stamina, quickness, and mentality to be able to land more punches on Mayweather than Oscar did. It will be interesting to see how Mayweather deals with this kind of pressure. The referee will be crucial in this fight. If you get a no-nonsense ref that doesn't allow Hatton to hit and hold and throw elbows it could be a long night for Hatton (much like it was a long night for Ruiz against Jones). I'm not comparing Hatton to Ruiz in regards to talent, I'm just comparing their tendency to hit and hold. I'm a fan of both fighters, so I don't really have a dog in this fight. If there's one thing that boxers don't like it's being pressured and not given room to move, box, and get their quick punches off. My guess is that it will take a few rounds for Mayweather to adjust to Hatton's pressure and style and to find a way to effectively nullify his attack. Look for Hatton to at the very least develop some swelling in the eye area and to possibly be cut by the 6th round. An uppercut would be very effective against Hatton. He's shorter and will be coming in quick. I can see Hatton being tagged with straight rights and uppercuts. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he hit the canvas at least once in this fight. Hatton will have his moments and could even hurt Mayweather to the body once or twice. This will be a fun fight to watch. I see Mayweather winning on either a late rounds TKO or a decision. Mayweather will not be unmarked after this fight. He will be marked up from a combination of punches and/or elbows.
I especially agree with you that the referee will be crucial to the outcome of this fight. For instance (to use to polar opposites to make the point), if Nady is the ref, then Hatton will likely be prohibited from holding, the fight will remain on the outside and Floyd will coast to victory; whereas if Smoger is the ref, Hatton will be able to get away with much more on the inside, will do some damage and ulimately discourage Floyd on way to a Hatton win. It will be interesting to see who is chosen! I will withhold my predicition until the referee is announced.
The referee must have been decided by now. I am sure that someone knows who the referee will be. When is the referee to a fight usually decided by, by the governing body involved? I agree that the referee will have a big influence, especially if the referee is pro-Mayweather and continuously interferes with the fight when it gets drawn to the inside.
good analysis :good Do you think Floyd should utilize his jab and initiate more, or sit back and look to counter? Do you think Floyd will be equally effective in the clinch, he is also very good at dirty tactics (pushing off with his forearm to be precise)?
Nice analysis. I couldn't think of anyone more well suited than Cortez. Very satisfied with that decision. Floyd should win based on what we've seen but I expect a Lewis/Vitali type fight where Hatton's thin skin hinders him from winning. It will be stopped on cuts with the momentum swinging in Hatton's favor. As crazy as it sounds, I give Hatton more of a chance the longer the fight goes on. Floyd may have more stamina but he will take more punishment win or lose in this fight. It will be a whole other fight that we aren't use to seeing Floyd in. Zab is his age but since him and Floyd have more similarities it grew easier for him as the fight progressed when technique starts to mean a whole lot more than handspeed as in the early rounds. People can talk about how Castillo will prove to be a more difficult opponent but I couldn't disagree more. As Billy Graham mentioned Floyd's specialty is in covering up whereas Ricky's is opening you up. It will be a constant struggle between the two. Floyd has fought this type of fighter before but for the first time it is someone who is his age and most importantly in the peak of his career. Come next saturday, you couldn't ask for a better prepared Mayweather or Hatton.
it's good for hatton only in the fact that he's a firm but fair unbiased ref. it's only good in the sense that it's not that pbf arse licking **** nady.
Thanks...yes a jab would be very useful against a guy charging forward. The jab was very useful against Tyson when Douglas was popping it. I expect Floyd to jab, throw that right hand of his and mix in a couple uppercuts. Also, remember that Floyd himself is very good on the inside when he either chooses to fight there or is forced to. In the first Castillo fight toward the end of the fight he fought in the pocket for an entire round and was beating Castillo at his own game. That was when Castillo was in his prime, and he was at least as good on the inside as Hatton. Yes, Floyd does occasionally push off with his forearm. He knows all the tricks, but overall is a pretty clean fighter.
Thanks, looks like we agree in regards to this being a rough fight for Mayweather, but that he will prevail. I think that the first few rounds will be interesting, and I expect Floyd to make some adjustments after the first few rounds. Cortez is a good ref and I'm hopeful that he will take control if anybody gets dirty and also will prevent the holding that has been occuring a lot in Hatton's fights as of late. Hatton is an exciting fighter when he doesn't hold.
Easy to say after the fact. Before the fight there were many people that were giving Hatton a very good chance of winning based on his pressure style and how effective Corrales was against Floyd when they fought. It's amazing how much people forget the sentiment prior to a fight. It's like when Jones fought Ruiz...many on his forum and 9 out of 20 writers picked Ruiz to knock Jones out. After the fight, everyone was saying "Of course Jones won, he was much faster than Ruiz and Ruiz was a bum, etc".
Are you sure you don't mean Castillo? Corrales got dominated for 10 rounds and bounced off the canvas 5 times!
