Hey guys, Enjoy my article: Hopkins Needs to Go Away By: Darrell La Montre Theres no denying his greatness. At 43 he is still able to defeat and at the very least compete with elite level fighters. He is a true future Hall of Famer and a genetic freak. His level of discipline, ring intelligence, technical skill, and defense are amazing to say the least. However, what is also amazing is that contrary to the norm, his actions and words are what have undermined his legacy as opposed to the usual diminishing of skills that typically contributes to an athletes decline. The Ill never lose to a white boy comment going into the fight with Calzaghe, coupled with Hopkins disgusting actions during the fight when he obviously faked that he was in excruciating pain from light punches that hit him slightly below the belt, but directly on his hard cup. Ive been in the ring and worn protective boxing cups, and they are as hard as a rock. The only way one can be that hurt that much from a low blow is if the punch lands underneath the cup (an uppercut to the nuts would do the trick), or so hard that the vibration is enough to leave you in pain. Hopkins was obviously pulling deep into his bag of tricks. Kudos to Cortez for being smart enough to know what was going on. Cortez is to be congratulated for not doing anything amateurish like deducting a point from Calzaghe which along with buying much needed to time to catch a breather, is exactly what Hopkins was attempting to accomplish. Do you really think Hopkins would have done this if he was winning? I was reminded of when Judah fought Mayweather and after getting off to a good start as Hopkins did, he was slowly being beaten to the punch, being solved and dominated over the second half of the fight much like Hopkins was. Around the same time in the fight, Judah hit Mayweather with a true low blow and followed it up with a hard rabbit punch. Judah claimed it was unintentional. Again, would he have done that if he was winning? Not likely. It is during moments like these that a fighters true colors come to the surface. Bernard is bad for boxing. Hes boring to watch fight, and his act is growing tired. As if Hopkins hadnt disgraced himself enough, during the post fight interview he showed no class and gave no credit to Calzaghe. Proving to be a sore loser on the level of Julio Cesar Chavez, Hopkins claimed he was on the wrong end of another bad decision and that the public would be the ultimate arbiters. He is correct that the fans are the ultimate arbiters (Ive made that same point myself), and the vast majority of fans believe he lost. During the post fight press conference, Hopkins had one last opportunity to show an iota of class and shake Calzaghes hand and congratulate him on the victory, but consistent with his actions throughout, he didnt. He also deserved Calzaghes verbal jab at the end when he said you got your ass kicked by the white boy. Even though Calzaghe didnt exactly kick his ass, and was the one with the marked face, he clearly won the fight and deserved the last punch.
How about instead of being negative about a legend who fought his last fight you praise him for a great career
its like a tale of two halves that article...very praising in the first half...full of hate in the second... the one bit i will take exception with is - "bernard is bad for boxing" er...never !! .
yea BHOP was nothing but great for boxing and because he might have exaggerated a low blow or still doesnt respect calzaghe cause all he does is slap like a *****. HES A LEGEND it doesnt matter what you think anyway. I am not really one to argue like this either you BHOP haters just **** me off with your hes a cheating fighter when he is actually a GENIUS in the ring
He didn't go out any way but his own way. Your perception my be your own reality but that makes no impact on Bhops legacy or how he is viewed by the boxing world. You have your own opinion and it was very well expressed in your article, but like you critique hopkins fans alike will critque your work. If you let it get to you then your in the wrong bizz....just like if Hop let guys like you get to him by their warp view of him and his career Bhop wouldn't have made it to this level, gotten the legacy he achived in the ring and wouldn't have any respect in the boxing world.
I have no problem being criticized, I was just pointing out that I praised him in the beginning. I was actually a big fan of his going into this fight, but lost a lot of respect for him as a human being due to his recent words and actions. I understand he went out his own way, and that's what I have a problem with. I don't like the way he chose to go out, do you?
I have no problems with how he went out. I think he showed how much dedication and love he has for boxing....I mean he's still fighting at 43 and past his best days. Regarding the words he chose to use and how he was verbal about his feelings leading up to the fight....I think it's hype....I think it's promoting the event and I think Bhop HAS TO do these kinds of things. Here's why....bhop's style isn't fan freindly...it was more exciting when he was young and in his prime but he's slowed and conserved a lot more as he added on years. Bhop won't or can't sell a fight to the mass public b/c he isn't very exciting. To hard core fans watching him is exciting bc we know his style and we know what to look for. some of the subbtle defensive and offensive moves he makes in the middle of exchanges are very impressive and worth my time. If Bhop was a complete gentelman he wouldn't be headlining any events. Not to mention fans alike wouldn't know what to make of a mild tempered Hopkins. Its who he is and it's how he sells fights. I don't think it was racist...I think the way it came out people could think that. If Joe said that he wouldn't loose to a black man the media would eat that up but I wouldn't think it's racist. The "Great White Hope" think could also be considered "racist" but to me like what Bhop did it's marketing...a way to sell a fight. It grabs the attention and interest of the public.
Armchair fan here... no particular axe to grind... I was rooting for Joe Calzaghe, but I was rooting for Ricky Hatton and took it like a man when he got his arse kicked... as a casual fan I've got a particular view that you guys might have overlooked... As a spectacle and a high profile advertisement for the noble art to a wider audience (you know, the wide audience with the money boxing needs if it isn't going to become a minority sport), that fight SUCKED. I'm sure that some of you will defend the butts and feigned injury as some kind of old-school genius, but according to the rules I've read Hopkins was a dirty, no-good cheat. And because of his choices, and his choices alone, the fight sucked. The one and only saving grace is that the cheat didn't prosper to further blacken boxing's reputation among the general public.. I don't give a good godddamm what Hopkins has achieved in his career over the years. On Saturday night he disgraced himself and damaged his art. Period.
You are entitled to your opinion even though you are a ****ing idiot and your opinion is not worth ****. I feel like I keep repeating myself but he did not damage ****. He was a legend in his sport and did many great things for it. Because people think that he faked a low blow which he might have doesnt effect his status as ATG or effect the sport in a negative way so stop overreacting like a little *****. Thanks
Well gee, insults. That told me. It was a **** spectacle for the uninitiated. Please advise me how that helps boxing win the wider public opinion that is needs if it is to survive as a major sport. Or call me a little ***** again if you think it'll help. I live to serve.
The wider public opinion wants ko, ko ,ko and people dying true fans of the sport want to see the sweet science at its best which Hopkins has provided fight after fight but because he might have faked a low blow he is bad for the sport and is a disgrace. So now do you understand why i think that you are a little *****.
I understand completely; it's because you haven't troubled yourself to read what I wrote. What I said was that it doesn't matter what Hopkins did in his career up until Saturday. What matters is what happened on Saturday. Now. Why do I say that only Saturday matters? Well, it's because the average casual punter has a memory like a sieve and believes what they're told. (Exhibit A for the prosecution:- the successful hyping of Jeff Lacy, Amir Khan and several other fighters that I'm sure you could name) Casual fans drink up the hype, otherwise hype wouldn't happen because people steeped in boxing don't need hype. This fight was hyped up to the max... "Battle for the planet" and other such shite. Messrs Calzaghe and Hopkins had a huge worldwide stage to showcase boxing and strut their stuff. This fight mattered because it impacted in the wider world in a way most fights don't. And the fight SUCKED. IT SUCKED. IT ABSOLUTELY SUCKED. For crying out loud, the only bit anyone remembers is the fake bum sex! Now, I'll ask again... what kind of advert was that to the average Joe Bunker? And the tactics of which fighter dictated the kind of fight it was? Answers... it was a **** advert and Hopkins' tactics were to blame. Hopkins (and, to be fair, Calzaghe) did himself and his art a disservice on Saturday. I might be a little ***** (and that's an easy insult from behind a keyboard), but you're still wrong.
