My Big Fight Picks

  1. Hi everyone :smooch

For me part of the fun of studying boxing is analyzing & predicting what will happen in fights so with regards to that welcome to my 1st fight predictions thread. Here I plan to update & bump this thread for the larger fights that happen over the coming months.

So providing the admins have no objections here goes!

November 8th 2008: Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones
Winner: Clear Joe Calzaghe decision with the possiblity of Jones even being KO'd

    How & Why:
First let me say I am not someone who wants Calzaghe to prevail in this fight, I'd love nothing more than to see Roy Jones KO or decision Joe but I'm afraid that I simply cannot see this happening in any way. I amy be wrong, I hope I'm wrong but I cannot see it. Roy is not the Roy of old and though we'd all like him to be he simply doesn't have 'one great fight left in him' as my close friends and many here believe.

Sure he's turned back the clock a little but not enough while as good as he looked in the Tito fight Tito was vastly overweight, slow and lacking power while Jones hasn't had foot & angle work for his last several fights; I see nothing to indicate he will bring his magical footwork nor speed of old to this fight ergo my belief he will lose.

Now Jones' recent resurgence owes alot to his re-stratagizing to take account of his sudden lack of reflexes most notably the Winky Wright perfected 'Shell' defence he now employs & as good & vicious as that left hook of his is it will not catch Joe I'm afraid because Calzaghe is not a stand up static fighter like Badi/Hanshaw or Tito. He might get caught but it won't be anything that will prevent him prevailing by the fight's end.

Jones will use that shell defence alot and try to counter while Calzaghe will press the action. Joe will either smother Jones on the inside dominating him via shots from all angles with his work rate as Jones goes into his defensive shell or he'll simply out jab him on the outside like he did Kessler - perhaps even varying between the two. Jones's shell defence will not work in his favour here it will be his undoing I believe. His hesitation to press the action will play into Joe's hands. Shots > points > win.

I would also not rule out the possiblity of Jones getting Ko'd & feel Joe will showcase his power a little more this fight; his power is very deceptive & when he wants to he can hit hard like the 8th round against Kessler for example - no other boxer has hurt Kessler with a body punch before to my knowledge.
Joe likes to smother and if he does that and Jones heavily defends + catches enough I could forsee Jones hitting the canvas because he simply doesn't have the legs to get out of danger around like he once did.

Should be a highly entertaining fight.

I think you are deeply wrong...and for the following reasons...

    1) Calz has fought ONE truly smart fighter...and that was Hopkins...and the reason he beat Hopkins is because B-hop doesnt have the stamina anymore...where as Roy has i think re-built enough of it to outlast B-hop

    2) Calz has the leakiest of defenses contantly leaving his hands down and his lack of balance will favor RJJ heavily when he counters him with a clean signature hard-stinging nose jab...

    3) RJJ has consistently been improving his skills back to vintage Roy (although nowhere near his old self of course) and it seems to me from 24/7 that he's slowly beginning to climb back into this fight with stronger odds...

    4) Calz had problems with B-hop's lance-like jab that he charges you with before clinching and seeing as how Jones has a similar jab and follows with a body shot or hook, not to mention his far better punching power in comparison to B-hop, this might pose as a serious problem for Calz

    5) I still find it hard to believe that Calz has power...the guy has to throw a million slaps before a guy goes down...and i dont see Calz landing enough to KO Roy without Roy movign out of the way and countering Calz

    6) it seems to me that Roy is no longer the gaunt and drained looking Roy from the Tarver and Johnson fights...so a KO for Joe is HIGHLY unlikely seeing as how Tarver AND Johnson both have greater power than JC hands down...

I think the only way JC has a shot at winning this fight is by pure work ethic and avoiding enough jabs to the face...

The only way i see Roy taking this fight is by scoring enough Knockdowns...i dont think he'll knock him out...but i think he'll score enough knock downs thruoghout the fight in order to favor him on points in the end...

    AND

just to add to my prediction as sort of a hunch...but seeing as how this is THE STRANGEST YEAR IN BOXING! as far as upsets go...I think Roy has a good chance of taking this one and shocking many boxing viewers and critics...

    Hopkins vs. Pavlik
    Cotto vs. Margarito
    Quintana vs. Williams
Samuel Peter vs. Giant Russian Guy (cant spell his name and not trying)
    Vic Darchinyan vs. Mijares

the list goes on and on...the upsets just keep comin' and i think this fight and the DLH fight will add to such a list of freak occurances...

Good thing you called the fight.

Not trying to take anything away from you, but it was an easy fight to predict, though.
